Something Awful has posted a hilarious, yet straightforward review of Restricted Area, giving it -43. Yep, that's a minus, not a dash.

At a Glance: "Gamer's Pulse" describes Restricted Area as one of the "Top 10 Most Wanted RPGs." RPGdot.com awards it an 82% rating, claiming "The core gameplay works like a charm, due to well thought out game mechanics supported by a superb interface." Gameindustry.com proclaims "Restricted Area seems to take the best parts of several of my favorite games and puts them into a single product." So what's the lesson to be learned here? Never visit any of those websites, as they're all run by sociopaths who have suffered extensive brain damage resulting from a nearly fatal fall off a haunted hayride.
...
To make up for the lack of characters, plot, coherent story, dialogue, or anything else which could possibly be viewed as something positively contributing to the game, the instruction manual has about 30 pages dedicated to some long, convoluted back story of various giant, faceless corporations of the future, as well as a detailed time line containing a bunch of things that might possibly be interesting if, oh let's see here, they were included in the game in even some remote form. I have absolutely no idea why somebody sat down and wrote this crap because it doesn't have anything to do with the game and you don't need to know it at all, nor does it help push the plot in any direction since the story is basically a giant 40-ton boulder sitting in the living room of an elderly couple who lost their vision and hearing decades ago.

There's really not much of a plot in Restricted Area, which makes perfect sense because there's really not much of anything in Restricted Area. For example, there's only one location in the game, the city you begin and end inside. This "city" isn't even a city; it's one street with buildings you cannot enter, inhabited by people who stand motionless and spew the same lines of dialogue every time you encounter them. These infinitely fascinating and colorful characters each have their own well-researched and complex personalities which truly help the game progress at a lightning-fast speed, much like a diseased rodent carcass which somehow crawled into a grade school cafeteria vat of macaroni and cheese.

For example, the character named "Doc" is a doctor! Then there's a character who has a gun; she sells you guns! And how could I ever forget the memorable scamp known as whatever his name was, the guy who wore a business suit and paid you money to kill things? We had good times together, and my fond memories of him will never die, no matter how much alcohol I funnel down my throat in an attempt to make the last week vanish like my college days.

I didn't play Restricted Area, but somehow I expected more from Master Creative. Well, at least the review is entertaining: ""Johnson": He's the character who wears awesome trendy sunglasses, sulks around in a black trenchcoat, speaks entirely in monotone, and somehow isn't J.C. Denton."

Thanks, hussar

Hmm, apparently we are popular in Germany: "damn, stupidoland has 4 names now: nma/dac/rpgcodex/sa", at least according to a guy with a cool handle "}/\/\A5T3RBlA5T3R{" who came to defend RA's honor at NMA. Hopefully, he'll come and play with us too.

}/\/\A5T3RBlA5T3R{ said:
everybody in the community knows that the guys at sa still can't get their heads out of their asses - even if they tried.

the hatred that some know-it-alls push in the face of ra is beyond any reasonable form of discussion.

let me put it straight: ra is a GOOD game - if what you want is a diabloesque shadowrun cyberpunk game. there won't be an official shadowrun game anytime in the future (legal reasons) - so let them play it.

@ all who think nma is not the place to discuss ra

ra has some kind of post-apoc relations. so it is just to discuss it here and to give them some news credit. people like you give me the creeps an make me puke.

btw: before any COMMUNITY VETERAN starts throwing mud at me: i am one myself and never understand why it is forbidden to love FO1+2 and any other game at the same time.

}/\/\A5T3RBlA5T3R{

P.S.: nma is getting a bad name in the community already. check this one out:

babelfished:
But on the other side, the Community, these slot ears likewise took over the rule: The industry is badly - the new products are bulletin hit - everything since plan escape: Torment and fall out are muck. This stupid gnarzige Geschwaetzigkeit is at least just as actually unbasiert as the acceptance of the industry over success and/or failure prospects determined computer games. For the industry the success of silent Storm must have been likewise a large shock, as all hard core players the KotOR liked the RPG Codex municipality, from its rows removed. The common slogan of the Cunning Dark Elves: It cannot be which be may not! [...] If then however a play such as Sacred tried well-known concepts to combine again (here: Diablo + Morrowind), then findets the mass ' oed ' and the hard core municipality ' bloed '. If someone should have the insolence a Light RPG in the HC (hard core) Community to promoten, then it can prepare for that was its life. All those are "marketing Whores" or "stooges". A discussion over the quality happened never - Light RPGs are not RPGS - that's it. A perfect example is the treatment of Restricted AREA defenders in the NMA forum. Sample obligingly/pleasingly?
http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13577
Intolerance and greed are at present krankt the sins at those the scene - the chances for the CRPG category were still so good before 2 years. Success of KotOR, Morrowind and Gothic, on PC and console showed that there is at all a mass-market. One since the 1999er I/O decision for a long time does not secure aspect. But industry and Community made the chance destroyed. [...] The Community breaks nearly in tears as with Bethseda Softworks a competent developer the "Fallout" license off acquires, because they are not Black Isle anno 1997. The HC- Community lives so much in the past to like that one nearly the MMORPG Community.

[edit] I forgot: most of the dumb*** at sa are the same dumb*** at nma. damn, stupidoland has 4 names now: nma/dac/rpgcodex/sa

RA is a shit game. That so many of us have played and enjoyed it to some level (myself included) says more about the availability of good games than anything else.

There simply isn't much of a game here. From the review and the graphics it seems more of a barely warmed over Fallout with cyberpunk elements tacked on.

If there's nothing much in the way of combat or strong plotting, going for the immersiveness factor (supposed the strong point of cyberpunk) would be nice, but alas. You can do much with a single city (Shadows over Riva is a good example) but barely any effort seems to be put in here. And I see the bane of European games is strikes here again: piss-poor voice acting. Sometimes cutting back on voice dialogue is best if you don't have the voice-talent.

That German kid couldn't be praising the game because it's a German game, could he? It's no where near as good as he claims, but it's also not as bad as SomethingAwful makes it out to be.

And all in all, it isn't worth playing. Seriously, just think about it - on the one hand you have Diablo 2. On the other hand you have Restricted Area. I choose Diablo 2.

I suppose if you were getting bored with replaying Diablo 2 then you might want to give RA a go.

Diablo 2 offers more variety of everything, though. In Restricted Area, every time you leave town, you end up in an area with a small, isolated patch of outdoors that has a dungeon in it. The ouside is a smallish area to kill outside type critters that's pretty open and kind of small. The dungeon typically has three levels with only a few crates and a lot of monsters - nothing else, really. It seems there's only two dungeon map generators in the game, outside and dungeon also. If there's more than one type of dungeon generator or if there's a lot of options for it, it doesn't really show. Eventually you get that, "Seen one dungeon, seen them all" feeling and that's pretty early in the game.

If you get bored with Diablo 2, Restricted Area might offer a diversion for a little while. However, it won't be that long because there's just not too much there.

I like Restricted Area because its a chance of pace. Diablo 2 is better crafted and with more, but RA has its own merits that make it a fun game.

The SA reviewer sounds like he had way too high expectations or something. It's just a goddamn action RPG. You make a simple character, have some simple tools in town and go around and blast the fuck out of a bunch of monsters and get stats.

It's not Ultima 7 or something, it's RPG Doom.

Restricted Area isnt the top Action RPG and its not really trying to be either, but that doesnt make it a bad one.

I think you should all e-mail SA and tell them how wrong they are. So their next update will be "what a bunch of morons rpg fans are", or some such. JE Sawyer aka Ropekid will laugh, for certain.

I'm not going to write anything, though, as I agree with them.

Just in case you guys don't know about Something Awful, not only do they exist only to entertain, but their 'reviews' are completely made up. They purposefully make incorrect statements about games and their reviews are not even based on actual play sometimes, it's a total and complete joke.
Go ahead and email them to tell them what you think, they will just make fun of you (and I will laugh). They do this specifically to mess with people.
And it's a friggin' hilarous site, you should check out the ICQ pranks.

That's just the Truth Media reviews. The other reviews are meant to represent the honest opinion of the author, and indeed, Restricted Area is pretty weak.

As I see it, the best thing RA has going for it is that Diablo two came out a long time ago. If it had come out four years ago, and ran on 2001 machines as well as it runs on 2005 machines, it would have gotten worse reviews than it's getting now. That's a daming criticism, ifor example if HL2 had come out in 2000 and ran okay, geeks would have been exploding all over themselves. If Fallout had hit in the early 90's there never would have been an rpg drought.

Spazmo's right. Not all the reviews on their website are 'fake'. TruthMedia's fake, because they take a good game like Half Life 2 and trash it for all sorts of very, very silly reasons (e.g. why can't you play in 3rd person? OMGWTF!)

Their other game reviews, suckass game map reviews, fucking weird porn reviews, shitty b-movie reviews and the "Your Band Sucks!" feature are all pretty much real and represent the opinion of the writer, and many, many other people. I hate to break it to you RA lovers, but their review of RA was pretty much real, and solid, to boot.

By the way, I don't mean to be a jerk to Jan Beuck, who's an awesome guy and kicks ass, but it really could have done with a lot more polish.

I'm actually kind of torn on whether 'Your Band Sucks!' is supposed to be the guy's honest opinion or not, but it doesn't really matter either way.

Well as long as the guy doesn't start picking on electro bands for being too 'niche', I'm alright with Your Band Sucks!

Nope, your band sucks is half-true, in one of the recent daily dirt's Dr. David Thorpe made it pretty clear that its mostly a joke. (though its pretty obvious from some of the other articles) and that he actually enjoys some of the bands he takes the piss out of.

Re

You can write about EVERY game that it sucks, it´s even pretty easy. HL2 for example is so boring that I still didn´t get up to play thou as I am just not interested in it. I tried it several times as the hype tells me that there´s something really wrong with me if I don´t like it, but it didn´t help. Same with the GTA games (but these look also ugly) which seemed to be loved by everybody but me. And that´s what SA is doing - that´s okay as long as people get they don´t really mean it to be a general truth but just an ironically oversubscribed bunch of words with a piece of truth. But ask yourself: How bad can a game be which the reviewer completed 3 (!!!) times? Don´t forget he isn´t paid for writing reviews and he doesn´t sound like a guy who sacrifies his life to the benefit of others...

Some people like RA and some don´t. Something of which I personally think that it is very funny is that the characters are often described as sterotype, while there are actually not enough cyberpunk games to say that about ANYTHING in this genre and this is never written about wizards or knights. I´m sorry for the voice acting (if it is really that bad), but we didn´t do it - nor the translation. I know my English is not good enough to translate a game and it´s something I accepted a very long time ago (and maybe in a far, far galaxy...).
