<a href=http://www.totalvideogames.com>TVG</a> has scored an <a href=http://www.totalvideogames.com/articles/Hellgate:_London_-_Q&A..._Feature_7965_3917_0_0_0_0_20.htm>interview</a> with Bill Roper about <a href=http://www.hellgatelondon.com/>Hellgate: London</a>:
<br>
<br>
<blockquote><b>Games increasingly seem to combine several genres for a more ‘wholesome’ gaming experience. With Hellgate merging the action of first-person games, along with the depth of an RPG, do you feel this is the direction many games will take, and are you doing it to try to capture a larger audience or to offer more gameplay components?</b>
<br>
<br>
While there have been first person RPGs, there has never been anything quite like Hellgate: London. We are creating an action oriented, fully randomized, dynamically generated RPG with a massive co-operative online component that combines the community and economy elements of an MMORPG with an individualized gaming experience. Imagine the massive diversity of items from Diablo II mixed with the persistent economy and vibrant community of an MMORPG played from the immersive perspective of Half Life 2. Players can play the game as a stand-alone RPG or join forces with players from around the world through a dedicated online gaming destination.</blockquote>

I'm ok with the Diablo's items, it's the "vibrant MMORPG community" part that bothers me.

I'm sure Hellgate will be interesting title to look for, but somehow that quote came to me like this:
Roper said:
While there have been first person RPGs, there has never been anything quite like $$$$$. We are creating an action $$$$$, fully $$$$$, dynamically generated $$$$$ with a massive $$$$$ component that combines the $$$$$ and $$$$$ elements of an MONEY_SINK with an individualized $$$$$. Imagine the massive $$$$$ from NAME_RECOGNITION mixed with the persistent $$$$$ and vibrant $$$$$ of an MONEY_SINK PAYED from the immersive $$$$$ of NAME_RECOGNITION. Players can PAY the game as a stand-alone $$$$$ or join $$$$$ with players from around the world through a dedicated online gaming destination.

What Bill Roper is referring to is the (free) online service that's similar to Battle.net. Players can basically meet on this service in graphical lobbies (think Guild Wars) and participate in co-op in very, very large groups, fighting against hordes of monsters. I'm not sure why that idea should bother you. Just play offline if you aren't interested in the multiplayer aspect.

It doesn't. It was that piece of text taken out of context.

As usual. :roll:

In any case, there will be a battle.net like service and you will be able to meet thousands of other players online to trade phat loot and play co-op with.

I personally hope that the implementation of an MMORPG-like economy will be in place, because trading SOJs and Zod runes as currency on Diablo 2 isn't my idea of an economy. It'd be really neat if there was an auction house machine where players could sell each other stuff easily without having to meet each other to trade. I don't see why that's a bad thing.

Here's a fact sheet for Hellgate: London

http://www.hellgateguru.com/factsheet.php

The stuff you need to know that's pertinent to this thread:
Single-Player and Online Multiplayer Support While Hellgate: London stands on its own as a single-player game, it also provides a compelling cooperative multiplayer experience through a dedicated online gaming destination. By creating unique and individualized game play “instances”within a vast online community, gamers get all of the best parts of traditional massive multiplayer games without the common downsides.

Yeah okay. Anyway you can probably join games on the fly in Hellgate London so you don't have to go "LFG"
