The <A href="http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/gearhead_dev/">Gearhead Development Group</a> on <A href="http://www.yahoo.com/">Yahoo</a> has a few of the beta files for <b>Gearhead 2</b> if you're looking for a preview of the stompy robot rogue-like sequel. Here's what the big man himself says:
<br>
<blockquote>I've uploaded v0.006 of the GH2 pre-pre-release to the development group. As before, the archive contains the source code, windows exe, and graphics all together.
<br>
<br>
The big change this time is the improved city support. There are two locations: a mall and a hospital. Both come with random NPCs and maybe some other content. There's too much repetition in the persona fragments at the moment but that's to be expected until I've added more content. The character viewer, training and injury viewer should all now work. In the code the vidmenus unit has been completed, the rules for missile launchers have been finalized, and the randmaps unit has been improved, though neither of these are yet apparent in the program.
<br>
<br>
That's about it. If you get a chance, try it out and give me some feedback.</blockquote>
<br>
I think the malls should have corporate sponsorship advertisements.

It'd also be nice if he would put all the files you need to play the game in one zip (unless I fucked up and got the wrong zip). Not really a big problem or anything, but still.

I don't get why he went 3D with it. The SDL graphics were working fine for me and conveyed the setting quite nicely, well, aside from those goofy anime portraits. Yuck.

This GH2 pre-release contains everything except the dlls. As it's not yet an actual release downloading the dlls separately may be the least of your problems with trying it. :)

I went 3D for several reasons, the biggest of which is that it makes my life as a programmer so much easier. It also allows zooming, rotating, and an over-the-shoulder camera.

You can see some screenshots here, but at the moment they're pretty ugly. The SDL mode still looks better. Things will improve in the future, but for right now I'm working on the game logic. Later on I'm hoping to find a volunteer to help beautify the renderer.

Yeah, but if GH2 is a bigger, badder, better version of GH.. I won't really complain too much about the graphics.
