GameSpot has post one of their interviews about the pc version of Fable. Here's a bit about accessorizing:

GameSpot: There are also a slew of new items, accessories, and monsters in the game. What's the rationale behind adding headgear such as hats? What are some of the cool new items and weapons?

Dene Carter: Ah, yes, hats. First of all, hats seemed strangely "Fabley" and were the perfect accompaniment to many of the new quests and challenges we've added to the game. We also found people to be ridiculously enthusiastic about them once they realized how much personality they added. Look at it this way: Darth Vader, defined by his hat. Indiana Jones, hat man. Leatherface, known for hat (well, face actually, but it's not so far off). See. It's obvious, really. People were defining their characters more by their haircuts and hats than any other modifiable feature, so we expanded upon it. For traditionalists who have not seen the light, we've also added a companion sword to the Sword of Aeons and new costumes, such as platinum armor.

I always thought of the whip when I think of Indiana Jones.

Why don't they just get rid of the action features too, and just make the game a medieval version of the Sims?

OMG I FORGOT! HATS = CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION =ROLEPLAYING!

Looks like I was right again when I made fun of the hat feature.

What am I missing? What is this hat fetis?. I remember Timmy C assuring posters before ToEE came out that there would indeed by "jaunty hats". Apparently this was of great concern to some people.

I think this kind of avatar customization is great...as icing. I like being able to configure the dude representing me in the gameworld as much as possible. I admit I got a kick out of it GTA:SA. Problem is too many folks are forgetting the cake.

I'm losing at internet poker right now and I enjoy that more than I enjoy the idea of paying for a new version of Fable still missing 70% of the crap the devs promised.

I have to agree with that statement. Given all the time they're spending making Fable: the Lost Chapters currently, you'd think they would be concentrating on adding what was promised in terms of mechanics as opposed to new weapons, hats, monsters, and adding a few more quests.

Except that the former would require lots of work as much of what they promised probably never made it past the conceptual stage (which seems to conisist of Peter M saying "wouldn't it be cool if x...hell I am going to say in interviews that x is in our game!")

The latter, what they are actually doing that is, is at most fucking around with existing code or more likely plugging in shit they just didn't bother/couldn't include in the first place.

I never played Fable and so cannot speak to whether it is any fun or not, but if I did like it I would want more of it...hats  , monsters and more quests. Of course if I did like it I woudl be bloody pissed that they were including all of this stuff and then expecting me to buy the fucking game again in order to se any of it.
