RPG Vault has posted Developer Diary #4 for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. This time, it covers the nature of good and apparently other good in it:

The dark side of the Force has traditionally been the easier path to power, but it demands much once the follower is hooked. For those who read that last sentence and saw only "power", there's a rough road ahead, but that's all right. Not everyone is cut out to be the selfless hero, and desperate people don't care if their savior is a little rough around the edges, a little twisted with rage, or if the cure proves worse than the disease. In fact, since the discipline of the light side is much more of a help as a character progresses, it's almost as if the dark side denizen becomes a bit of an underdog. And everyone loves the underdog, right? Well they'd better.

Sometimes you root for the bad guy. There are many ways to fall away from the light side of the Force in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. We're making sure of it.

There you have it, bad guy = savior. Come on, someone act surprised here.

"I am Darth Mookie, Sith Lord and the most powerful being in the galaxy. My triple red lightsabers (the art of fighting with your teeth is a difficult one to master), and lightboomerangs and a couple lightgrenades, I am a totaly unstoppable force of evil and cruelty. Now, to reap pain and suffering throughout the galaxy--what's that? You lost your cat? Sure, I'll help you! Just make sure to give me some ph4t l3wt!"

It's really too bad. A Star Wars RPG would have potential.

Or more like, "You fools, can you not see that doing petty errands for you only makes me stronger! Bring on your lost kittens, ask me to deliver letters to long-lost relatives, request me to turn my Jedi powers of persuasion towards getting your girlfriend to make up with you. I relish the opportunity! Once I have done it approximately 50 times, I will be the supreme master of the galaxy and crush you all under my heel!"

I think Star Wars on the computer is pretty much a lost cause, anyway. Although I have plenty of nice memories of high-stakes gambling on Bespin and getting my Jedi's ass handed to him by Vader in PnP, it's probably going to take original settings for any worthwhile space RPG's.

What's funny is that they're locked in to the same silly idea that they've always had, which is a CRPG cliche in and of itself, that "evil characters" will follow a good guy plot and do things to advance their powers. That's basically what Walks with the Snails was pointing out, but I'll elaborate on it a bit.

Why would an evil character, one that follows the Dark Side, give a rat's ass about saving a village, really? That's pretty small time for someone seeking the power that Siths actually care about. Hell, Vader blew up planets, think he cared about saving towns? So, the only motivation an evil character would have in this game is the RPG cliche, advancement by doing quests. Now, there might be an evil method of doing it, but the end result is that the town gets saved. That seems like a more neutral point of view to me. It's an "Ends Justify Means" category.

There really isn't a setting justification for this either. In a fantasy setting, power over a small town might actually mean something. However, we're talking about Star Wars here, not one small area of Sword Coast where it can take days or weeks to travel from one town to another. We're talking about hyperspace travel to other worlds being common.

I can see it before me, saving towns on Tatooine pushes up your reputation to 20 and you get cheap l00t at the shoopkeepers at Coruscant or wherever. Heh.
