The beta for the turn-based isometric RPG with first-person combat Lords of Xulima should be coming by the end of March, as the latest Kickstarter update informs us:

We expect to have the beta complete and ready by the end of March. One month after that, provided there are no major problems, we will release Lords of Xulima to the world.

The four main story arcs are finished and we even have the final cut-scenes of the game wrapped up. All of the maps are complete. Xulima ended up with 15 distinct regions, 5 villages and 30 dungeons. We are now working on balancing all the different game mechanics including combat, abilities, classes, etc… We have also included new types of traps, enemies and puzzles. We’ve also completed development on the Cursed Hounds which are terrorizing the forests and roads of Xulima.

Also stalking the lands of Xulima, the Four Sisters, witches whose names are Arwinzel, Yoranwa, Wendofel and Vilowia. Maybe you’ll be able to avoid them entirely and continue on your mission, but we’re sure you’ll be curious to find out what they are hiding in their dark lairs.

The Hall of Heroes is already finished and we are anxious to see how many of you will be able to solve the mystery of the 20 statues.

It’s also now possible to sail to Varas Talak, provided, of course, you know the exact course to use to reach those enchanted isles.

Sounds good. You can still opt for the Lords of Xulima early beta access, by the way, or just pre-order the standard digital edition on the game's official website.

You can also check out the previous update about a new enemy, The Cursed Hounds, and the town theme song.

I have a hunch this game is gonna turn out really good.

It better.

It combines many things I like in RPGs. Beautiful 2D isometric graphics, exploration/interactions with an Ultima vibe, wizardry-style combat and a general atmosphere of exotic fantasy and adventure.

As always, we are very grateful for the news CB :) And the Codexians who are being so patient, as well!

Lords of Xulima's game engine is very flexible and allows for many gameplay features; once the Beta is out, we really hope many of our backers will be willing to come and contribute their creativity to the game. Close ties will be maintained with our testers, so as to get the most feedback possible.

I've probably said that before, but RPGCodex's support has meant a lot to us, and we hope to repay you in kind!

I am looking forward to this project.
I think they combined iso-exploration (a lot faster than FP blobbing) and FP Blobbing combat (much faster than tactical combat), for making both the exploration and combat fast. Just hope this means plenty of content.

Got quite some hope with that game.
Despite being a backer i have no interest in the beta (not just this game, every beta).
Also the game looks nice, all the houses seems really small compared to characters.
For example if the dude in front of the house north est of the inn had to sleep in it, his bed will take more than half the house space.
Builiding/charcters' scale look very wrong to me.

Glad to hear it's progressing well.
I have to admit, I felt backing this was more of a risk for me since Numantian wasn't a proven dev, but the game just ticked too many right boxes for me;
So this is very all very good to know about! Can't wait to see more.

The characters are too tall in respect to the houses in town.

Maybe that was the aim of the developers, a game with a more cartoonish feeling.

Also having enemies just fade away instead of corpses laying around and no death animations, combat feels very unrewarding.

Maybe some of the extra funds would have been better spent this way?!

Wow, this brings graphicswhorism (yeah, I just invented that) to a whole new level.

Indeed, they should have spent their funds on death animations, as that is clearly more important than more content and gameplay depth. +M

Ok, if you say so...
As long as you don't quit your daily job involving eating shit and try to squeeze yourself into game design.

Ouch, seems I've hit the mark there!
And I fear I already did quit my daily job of eating shit and started getting into game development.
I even gained the strange insight that death animations are somehow of less importance than insignificant things like game mechanics.

But worry not, you can always ignore whatever horrible game we develop and throw at you and instead play some Tekken, Mortal Kombat or Final Fantasy 12. The death animations there are brilliant!

P.S: You should never play a roguelike. It would break you utterly. The game depth to animation ratio in those games is too much for some.

It would be nice if there was at least "fade into red" , tho
I don't even disagree. The game is nowhere near perfect graphics wise (about the mechanics, we will have to see). The screenshots all look too flashy, bright and saturated to me, but maybe this will fit when you are actually playing.

But someone popping up, saying that the characters are too tall for the buildings and combat "feels" unrewarding because of non-existent animations and that this should have been improved instead of things like content and writing, now that is something I came to expect on some browser game or MMO board, but not here ;)
