IGN offers up first impressions of Dungeon Siege 2. The guy really digs the game, but he apparently also dug the first one too. Anyway, here's a fun part of it:

Of course, making a favorable comparison to Baldur's Gate will get a lot of people in a lather, especially since DS1 was basically an action RPG. I didn't expect DS2 to deliver this winding, twisting story. Underneath the hood of the graphics engine and rudiments of combat, DS2 feels like a completely different experience than its predecessor. However, DS2 starts out slowly, like anything with a long plot arc can. I think this is one of the reasons why the recent demo was so huge, both in size and in the amount of content, because you can't really appreciate what's going on until you've been playing for a few hours.

I can see where this would ruffle some feathers. I didn't even like Baldur's Gate, and I think making this comparason is a joke.

IGN and Gamespy are, in my opinion anyhow, completely unreliable for any form of an accurate opinion even if it is glowing with praise. Avault is normally quite good, Eurogamer isn't bad, they have good writers at least who are able to say ill of a title should they choose. I would look for writeups there. I will post my 2c when I get it (fingers crossed) this coming week. Just bear in mind I already love the demo, so chances are my views will biased slightly. :p

On a side note, do you guys think the Pit of Despair will return? :)

If you ask me, they (gamessites) all have their bad moments from time to time, Eurogamer too yes (Avault isn't representative anymore, they practically only do hardware now) .

BG was fine, comparing it to a hack & slash game with party combat (the worst idea ever for hack & slash imo) is just 'not done'.

Well, BG was fairly combat oriented and the story was basically a Highlander rip off. However, it was much, much better in terms of execution than the story in DS2. The dialogue in DS2 just leaves a lot to be desired because in the tutorial, you're kind of a dick. That's your only dialogue options, being a dick. After the tutorial, there's a few dick lines and after that it's pretty much goodie two shoes lines. It actually makes you pine for BG's two choices of dick or nice guy so you can maintain a little consistancy.

Plus I still think it's lame that the bad guy attacks you at the end of the tutorial with very little reason to do so other than to show he's the big evil dude. It would have been far better, and much less corny, if you were wounded in the battle with the temple guard and Valdis just left you there to die because he's "bad" and doesn't give a crap about life.

He is evil because there is a V in his name.

It would be interesting if the 'big bad guy' of a game was named something just like Brian or Ted.
