There's a review of Dungeon Siege 2 over at 1Up. The score is a 7/10 and they make a comment about the game being more like Dungeon Siege 1.5 rather than a sequel. Anyway, here's a clip:

While the group may have a mix of ranged and melee characters, those distinctions go out the window pretty quickly, and fights degenerate into a chaotic free-for-all. This puts every character other than the heavily armored fighter class at a distinct disadvantage. Robe wearing mages simply don't stand-up well to the giant club of an ogre. It also makes leading the party with anyone other than a fighter difficult as going in first with these softer characters only gets them beat up that much sooner.

I've found it a lot easier to use a ranged fighter as my lead while letting the NPCs rush in . That way, I can monitor the "free for all" from a reasonably safe distance. Of course it's chaotic if you're the guy rushing in.
