Dex is a cyberpunk "sidescroller open-world non-linear RPG" with action combat, which looks kinda Shadowrun Returns-inspired to me and has now been released on Steam Early Access.

Explore the futuristic city of Harbor Prime and meets its many inhabitants, answer the challenges the city has to offer, roam the neon-lit streets, and augment your character with skills and implants.

Designed as a tribute to the classic RPGs from the ‘90s, updated for a modern audience, Dex invites you to become part of a living, breathing cyberpunk universe as you decide which ultimate path you will embrace.

The current version is limited in both content and features. Right now it is a small tour of the cyberpunk universe we are crafting. You can do a couple of quests and visit a handful of locations in the city of Harbor Prime. After that you’ll be able to follow along with the development as we progress.

We expect the final version of the game to be released by the end of 2014. However, the exact launch date and total development time will depend, to some extent, on the input and feedback we receive from the community.

The current Early Access version is still very early in development, though, with only a handful of NPCs, quests, etc., available.

Thanks almondblight!

Looks very pretty and interesting. If it ever gets finished, I'll probably buy it but we'll see, definitely not a title I will buy in EA.

hm, color me interested, but how is this an rpg?

So far it's obviously just an open world "go around, beat up random people and increase a few skills" but that's due to super early status. They want to add storyline, npcs and stuff during development. Although I am too curious about what they mean by "Designed as a tribute to the classic RPGs from the ‘90s, updated for a modern audience".

Very ambitious I'd say.

Well, I played a super early version of this a while ago so I imagine it was pretty different then, but it had quests, choices, stats and leveling, items, pretty much everything that makes an RPG. It has platformer controls but it's definitely an RPG.

The atmosphere and ambiance were amazing, but from what I can remember, the dialogue was very sparse and not very well-translated. That'll get fixed, it might even be fixed already. Everything about the game beyond the weird dialogue seemed awesome and I can't wait to see it in a more final state. I'll definitely be getting this.

nope. also, the music is getting on my nerves and options are greyed out so i can't turn it off without muting the entire game. game can't handle alt-tabbing either... but it looks damn pretty.

How is the combat? Is there a lot of it and does it give XP? It looks like the game may have some kind of Flashback-y gunfighting system, or perhaps Blackthorne.

They mention stimpacks in the last screenshot. That's obviously hardcore

Graphics are excellent.
As i understand it, it is an rpg because it seems to have stats, inventory, sidequests/dialogues options and by the look at it is not linear.
And maybe above all a global map where you can come back (and surely have to) to already visited place, so same gameplay as in a classic cRPG.
So a bit like Fallout except not isometirc but a sidescroller view and of not TB.

Excellent original idea if it is that, never heard of a sidescroller cRPG before (maybe the Quest of Glory Game ? never like the setting so i never really play those, and it were not true sidescrollers nor cRPG anyway).
Much more interesting to me than a 3D cRPG like Elder Scroll.
Would have been even better if TB though.

Looks really pretty. Judging by steam reviews it's a really, really early alpha, so I'll probably wait a bit before purchasing. But still, really pretty. :desu:

Color me intrigued.
I'd like to get someone's opinion on it so far before I contribute.
I love cyberpunk tho, and good cyberpunk is my opiate.

Trying to figure out how lockpicking works.

Edit: Ah, it was a lock that required an actual code.
