RPG Vault has posted a developer diary about the weapons in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Lightsabers
In a category by themselves, lightsabers are the most challenging weapon to use, but are also the most impressive in combat. Like the Jedi in the movies, the player character in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic will be able to modify his or her own lightsaber with crystals of different properties, personalizing them to best fit their style of combat. And if that player would prefer a double-blade or wants to wield a separate lightsaber in each hand, he or she can do that as well.

Okay, I've seen all the movies and I really don't remember any Jedi mixing and matching crystal pieces to make their weapon more powerful.

So you can change your saber colour on the fly? Reminds me of an old Dilbert cartoon where the Pointy-Haired Boss tells Dilbert he wants a new database. Dilbert figures PHB doesn't really know what a database is and so asks, "What colour do you want it?" To which PHB replies, "I think mauve is the fastest."

Don't remember them dual-wielding in the movies, either, but that's how it goes, I guess. I'll be waiting for the screenshot of the dark-skinned jedi with pointy ears.

They did in Episode 2.

And one of the dark jedi from Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight dual-wielded lightsabers, although I don't know if the games can be considered a reliable source, even if they are often better than the movies.

Actually, in the whole Star Wars mythology, the colour of the lightsaber derives from the crystal inside. So, mixing and matching the crystals isn't that far off.

For some reason when they say crystals I get this image of the crystals from Final Fantasy VII. "Luke summon a Chocobo."
