I never got through it myself, but I enjoyed that Radiata Stories had dwarves that spoke with an Eastern European (it's been a while, but I think it was supposed to be Polish-esque) accent. And, for some reason, wore weird boxes on their heads. Couldn't stand the game for very long, but saw that and laughed like "WOW, see? Something new! In a JRPG! I am flabbergasted."

Also, while usually you can lay unoriginality at the feet of marketing, I wouldn't always do so. Sometimes people DO get to make the games they want. Sometimes when that happens you get Gears of War. (No excuses for that will be accepted, Cliffy B - it is another space marine story, ONCE AGAIN. NOOOOOOOO!)

Heh, Gears of War... I still find it surprising that no one tried to copy the Serious Sam formula: instead of trying to make your action game appear more mature by giving it a "deep" storyline, why not acknowledge that, unless you got a really good story and characters, its pretty much silly and make fun of it, deconstructing the clichés of the genre? Instead we get contests of who can have the biggest badass in their game...

Anyway it's a bit sad that while fantasy should be defined by "imagination, esp. when extravagant and unrestrained", most fantasy works try to follow and fit the same canvas as the others. Every time I play King of Dragon Pass, I think that an RPG set in Glorantha has the potential to refresh the genre, as long as it has good story and characters.

The end of 2007 was nice, with both Mask of the Betrayer and The Witcher. Not sure when we'll see something similar again.

I'd have 'em dress like that:

And make the Elves look like Cossacks.
