Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I'm saying it's shit. How anyone could not is beyond me. The quests and writing are more shallow than World of Warcraft. To say Arcania had potential (outside of its visuals) is to say you never even played the game and merely looked at screenshots/watched videos. It is insultingly bad.

Quests and writing...

The worst part about the gothics series (and the main reason why I never put more than half an hour in 1/2) was the shit combat. Actually shit combat is a staple of PB games which is why I'm never buying any of their games again unless they end up as a 2-3 dollar sale on steam. Arcania had excellent combat, with fluid controls that didn't need to be activated 4-5 times before your tourette paraplegic protagonist swung his sword.

The controls are fluid, but Gothic is one of the few games where you character doesn't break the laws of physics when you smash the buttons hopping for something awesome to happen. I had tried it multiple times paying attention to this mystical unresponsive controls, and it was always the case that when my char was in position to do some move then he would execute it instantly.

G4 doesn't break the laws of physics either and yet its controls are flawless. I bought g3 cheap the other day and it doesn't seem to be nearly as bad as its predecessors so maybe I'll give it a try once i have my PC's hard drive replaced, although I couldn't shake the feeling that I was engaged in a digital simulation of cardboard figure fights. The Float is strong in that one.

G3 combat animations are mostly pretty bad, but I was playing it with CP, on hard, with alternative AI on so I had payed more attention to staying alive, and trying to win then on animations, and that was never the most important in graphics department anyway. With maxed ini the game has amazingly looking scenery, you can set quality graphics almost as far as you are able to see unlikely in Skyrim that looks like blurry mess even after tweaking it.

Screw animations, G3 has one of the worst character models ever.

I had seen some Arcania combat video, and based on that in comparison to GothicI,II/Risen combat I guess by clunky you mean not being so much faster/not having stun lock so I can't bash attack over, and over again expecting it all to land. That is what makes GothicI,II/Risen combat good you need to know how many strikes you can get (usually 1-2 before you have to find another window to attack), when to defend, or when to dodge (Risen) you can't just Spam attack it has nothing to do with unresponsive controls but with your char just not being faster then everybody else/not having combat based on stun lock.

I'm resurrecting this thread to say that after 11 years, my opinion hasn't changed and I still like Arcania: Gothic 4. Fuck the haters.
