Duly to the release of Arcanum on GOG - what a coincidence - Arcanum got reviewed by gameshard.net scoring an incredible 8/10. Incredible if you keep in mind that it neither has bloomboobs nor alien sex.

Like most RPGs, the skill in playing Aracum comes down to whether you understand what the numbers that make up your character mean. Fortunately Aracunm is fairly transparent in it’s inner workings, holding the mouse pointer over an enemy in combat gives you a percentage, much like it did in the original Fallout, it also tells you what penalties you are receiving, for instance if it is too dark in this particular dungeon, a light bulb will appear telling you to light a torch or otherwise illuminate the area is you want to dramatically improve your chances.

Most fights come down to clicking on the enemy and hoping for the best, maybe using one or two tried and trusted spells, experimentation just seems to get you killed quicker.

Amusing that they took this out in Dragon Age. I had to download a mod to know how damage was calculated, what different stats did apart from the vague/misleading descriptions.

I do not know how someone could play without info tooltips... do they guess stats and just pick equipment what looks most 'awesome'?

A good old classic getting the deserved but late 10 seconds of fame thanks to GOG. More of that and I just might change my opinion about it.

Honestly, most old school RPGs that are not explicitly based off a PnP ruleset are like this. Do I know how damage is calculated in Ultimas I-V? Fuck no! All I know is that when I raise my strength or dexterity or whatever, fights get a little easier.

Gosh, then I guess Ultima could have used a few improvements, eh?

The game has another couple of niggles, weapons break at an alarming rate, you often find yourself running away from monsters not because you are low on health, but because you have no weapons left. And for a game of such size and with so many side quests available to complete, the journal is a bit too vague. A typical entry will read something like “Ogdin wishes you to bring the book ‘The Hand’ to him”, with no mention of where to start looking, or where Ogdin is to be found once you’ve found the book.
Reviewer is retarded.

"It's" instead if "its", "you're" instead of "your", "then" instead of "than"... This shit is so common that you just don't see it, especially if you're not a native English speaker.

Anyway giving it 8/10 seems too much for me. 6/10 would be much more appropriate, especially after all those years (7/10 when it came out if we assume it was playable).

This shit is so common it makes me cringe whenever I see it, even though I'm not a native English speaker and my grammar is far from perfect.

That particular quest is badly designed. I suppose, only a small number of people have actually completed it. Ogdin is on the Isle of Despair which you can visit only once, at a specific point in the storyline. But the book is on the mainland! You have to find it before going to the IoD and getting the quest and in a random barrel, no less.

I think I notice these because I'm not a native speaker, since accent, schooling, etc, don't affect me

I also often get the meaning of a sentence better than a native speaker because I don't have complete confidence about understanding something after the first read, unlike a native speaker. This also happens with double entendres and the like, since these are intended to initially confuse people who speak the language (though I'm not sure "confuse" is the best word for it)

I played it for the first time Saturday night as a result of it being on GOG. I'm happy I did.

I took the character history where you recovered from blindness - not sure if that's going to bite me in the ass later, but I'm having a good time.

For the grammar nazis, here's one from the review "The main difference in Arcanum though is that the ogres that you meet will more likely be wearing dinner jackets then the steaming entrails of their enemies."

So they're talking about the sequence in which they wear dinner jackets and entrails, not one or the other.

I guess it's a rule-of-three thing, fighters fight in the pits, diplomats persuade Ogdin, and thieves would have looted that barrel to give the book to Ogdin. The retardeness in the review is that he would need more details in the journal, since there are only so many people on the isle of despair.
