Are there any space sims with RPG elements?

I want to play a space sim where when I land on a planet, I'm greeted with more than menus to buy/sell items and pick up missions. I'd like to actually take control of my pilot and crew to explore the world's surface. I want to wander around exotic, varied cities, get missions in seedy bars and have plenty of non-space ship ass kicking. Let me build around myself a diverse crew with stats that affect both typical RPG functions and piloting skills.

Basically, I guess I want a space sim with a full-fledged RPG once I hit the ground. Is there anything even remotely like that out there?

SunDog is about as close to what you want as I've seen. There was also a freeware RPG called HajoWorld that was never completed or released. I think there's also an upcoming game by an ex-Troika developer that is SciFi. I doubt it will feature Space combat and trading, though.

I've also tried to convince the VegaStrike development team to implement more RPG aspects (comparable to Mount&Blade), but the idea has been mostly unpopular with them as well as the community.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll have to check them out.

Though I was only able to get it to work in Internet Explorer. It wouldn't work in Firefox even using IE tab.
I had no probs at all getting it to run in Firefox.
You just press the button that appears on the web page to install the Firefox plugin.

(BTW, nice find)
