The Bard's Tale IV Kickstarter campaign reached $1.1M and 25,000 backers over the weekend, but it's now slowed down to a relative crawl and it'll take some time before it reaches its funding goal. Nevertheless, inXile have returned from their weekend vacation today to announce the campaign's first stretch goal in a new Kickstarter update, which also includes a 10 minute Q&A session with Brian Fargo.



Stretch Goals

Another question was regarding stretch goals. Where are they? We certainly have a number planned and ready but it just doesn’t feel right to put them out before we know we’re going to fund. Now that we’re comfortably heading to being fully funded we can no longer resist sending the first of these your way!

At $1.3 million, we will add an enhanced companion NPC system and add 2 more CNPCs, including Lioslaith the Shadow, a legendary Spear Daughter of the matriarchical Fichti people, the dark haired, woad-painted nature worshippers who live in the deep forests far to the northwest of Skara Brae.

With this enhanced companion NPC system, all recruitable NPCs will have unique personalities and backstories which will open up interesting side content and add rich and surprising reactivity to your adventure. In addition, these CNPCs will voice their thoughts and asides, giving their take on the people, places and events that you encounter as your party moves through the world. No two CNPCs are alike and they carry their own reputations with them. While they can add some additional firepower to your party, some might even get you into more trouble than you were expecting…

Here's a summary of the Q&A video:
  • inXile are aiming for maximum immersion outside of combat, but you will be able to optionally turn the HUD on if you want.
  • Combat will use either a traditional blobber perspective or a JRPG-like third person perspective, depending on budget. Gameplay will remain the same either way.
  • As many have suspected, the "dynamic phase-based" combat system appears to be just a traditional "squad turn-based" system ala X-COM, where your entire team gets to move before the enemy team moves, rather than all turns being interleaved.
  • Your party will consist of four player-generated PCs, plus an NPC and a summoned creature.
  • The game will have both challenging setpieces and random encounters. inXile will try to make the latter not feel like mindless trash mob battles.
  • inXile are attempting to reach a compromise between the original games' punishing save system (where you could only save in the Adventurer's Guild in town) and modern save anywhere conventions. There are no details yet, but it sounds to me like you might need to find and unlock save points within areas.
  • You will be able to cast spells outside of combat, which will be used to solve environmental puzzles.
  • The story of the game takes place 150 years after the original trilogy. You will discover why all those evil wizards and mad gods were so obsessed with Skara Brae.
  • The game will have a character system similar to the original games, including their prestige class mechanic, which will be expanded.
The best part of the video, though, is when Brian finds himself having to explain what a "blobber" is - a term that, as far as I can tell, originated on the RPG Codex and never really travelled that far. Until now.

I will repost my post here then.
I like most of the things that he said my only complaint is that there are only one space for a CNPC, two would be much better in my opinion. But then naturally one has to create the all the relations, which results in quadrupling in worst case of the necessary work for the all the CNPC. This additional space could be a naturally a stretch goal.
Also SJW alarm!!![/sarcasm] Liosliath the Shadow is not so attractive (for an NPC) as the man simply called "The Bard". But also "The Bard" with his rat summoning (not a summon) skill, talking / singing and him mocking sword and his talking to a invisible person that he calls the narrator would be an awesome stretch goal. This CNPC and character creation system is like in the first WL, and is a nice synthesis between only unique characters and all generated character in the first three Bard's Tales. CHRISTINA, ACE and etc in WL were therefore unique interesting characters with somehow their own story.
Now to the saves: it sounds interesting, but i currently don't know how to this other than to buy one or two saves, before going on an adventure from the adventure guild. But overall i think it would be better if the players could decide how they want to play by himself, but naturally save everywhere option should be punished somehow, while the iron man mode should be rewarded.

They should just make saving a bard song.. If you don't have a bard, then you're shit out of luck.

Yes i have noticed this. But they don't name him explicit, therefore i assume that second statement, because he on his own is big enough for a separate stretch goal at 1.5mio. Nevertheless he alone is worth that i raise my pledge. And the Bard could be like the Captain Jack Sparrow of the celtic bard's tale world, or the Nameless in the spaghetti western, or Han Solo in Star Wars, an perfect charismatic Anti-Hero.

i dislike a save point system, i dont want to have to leave my computer on with the game running if i have to leave the house or go do some other shit.

Save anywhere is essential these days, especially in these big complex rpgs.

Stick to the good old first person perspective as far as combat encounters are concerned, regardless of the amount raised - don't let your precious resources and man-hours go to waste.
Also, get bloody funded already, it's taking way too long to feel comfortable about hitting any stretch goals. Sadly.

Post Scriptum: speaking of the latter - the Castle of Candarr (or what's left of it after all these years) would be a neat one.

Backtracking form the adventurer's guild only makes you stronger. Or at least the surviving archmage, who
carries them all. And someone has got to support the local temples. After reviving you'll notice half your
party is old. So you they've gotta fight to get young again. And supporting the local temples.

Fallout 4 and now Avellone leaving Obsidian?

Fargo picked the worst time for this kickstarter.

Hmmm, I'm not sure why Avellone leaving Obsidian would be bad news for inXile's prospects.

Surely, to some people, the chances of Obsidian ever making a fresh new Kickstarter IP now seem farther than ever. So, in inXile they trust.

Everyone here at the codex forgot about Bard's Tale the second F4 was announced, and Avellone's departure has completely swamped people's attentions.

If the codex is representative of the target audience Fargo needs to keep hyped...

If you're going to require "save points" that might take significant amounts of play time in order to locate, you'd better damned well make sure your game's engine is rock solid. Games aren't nearly as stable as they were back in the DOS days; one ill-timed BSOD or CTD and your last two hours' worth of hard-fought progress goes out the window.

There'll be mayhem in the streets!

The pace is great... somehow... it's always approximately 20k per day. Slow, but steady.
(No fun intended, other kickstarters would be happy to keep this pace).

I'm sure there will be some kind of backup auto-save feature, just not one you can manipulate.
