I think a certain, recent expansion campaign might have beat you to this idea...
I actually liked the Genie merchant, very useful even though I think he only paid a maximum of 5000gp's for any items.

Why can't we just have a bag of holding with a portal to a merchant in it? We sell him stuff through the bag and he gives us gold. Same idea, but its alittle more amusing.

Beyond Good and Evil does this, and it actually works well and doesn't detract from the immersion. Of course, there aren't any items to sell in BG&E but you do sell the photographs you take, which are transmitted via e-mail to an environmental agency who are documenting all of the flora and fauna on the planet. Each photograph is converted to cash, depending on the rarity of the species you took a photograph of.

On the same note, In the Discworld universe, you can have a bag that has a conduit to "L-Space", which if you want, can be a shared location in L-Space of which two or more conduits may access, like for example a shopkeeper might be able to retrieve anything you put in your sack. That's neat. Maybe that's not how L-Space works - it's been awhile since I've read the books.

That said I wouldn't mind seeing a Discworld RPG, especially if it contained neat concepts like L-Space and Darklight.

I just hope that Bard's Tale can sufficiently explain (in the game) the item upgrades and add to the immersion.

No, L-Space is found only near large collections of books, such as a really good used bookstore or library. Only trained librarians have a prayer of safely navigating it. You may be thinking of the Luggage instead.
