The original lossless png was probably even less than 40KB.

I hate modern web design and wish we could go back 15 years
almost everyone who is interested in talking about it has years of experience and is absolutely dumbfounded that anything might be new and alien
The idea that someone might not share the same level of experience or knowledge is extremely obvious and basic. I don't know where you're getting this from.
That level of disconnection is literally autistic
Videogames aren't voodoo magic. Adults can learn to operate 1-ton missiles made of steel and plastic moving at 90km/h zooming past each other separated by a dotted line. I'm sure they can pick up videogames, it just takes time and giving half a shit.
most website now are prioritized and optimized for mobile devices isntead of desktops.A good example is Hardcoregaming101. I like the site for its in-depth articles on obscure old games, but when they updated the software their website runs on, or something, they had to redesign it and now it looks like one of those terrible modern sites where everything is too big and clunky and has a shitty layout. To top it off, they even lost some functionalities compared to the old style!

A backup of the old site: https://hg101.kontek.net/
The original layout is sadly broken on the backed up old site, but here's an article accessed with the Wayback Machine for comparison:

Simple and elegant design. Screenshots are on the right side. Navigation is at the top. The bottom has a "Discuss on Fourms" and "Back to Index" link so you can quickly access either the forum thread or the site's index. It's all very functional, and the layout is simple and easy to read.
It looks much, much better than the new design.
And this is happening to almost every website these days.
