an NWN2 would likely be similar to BG3 in the sense that it would not be related to its predecessor in any way, shape or form. the flaws in NWN are obvious even to the original developers so i'm guessing it's another name only transition for sales.

btw, jefferson was originally NOT going to be BG3. they only did the marketing sleight of hand after it was in development (against the devs' wishes) for obvious reasons. it would be interesting if obsidian got ahold of that mess since some of their devs originally worked on it...

Jefferson was almost finished, so if Atari got it from Interplay real cheap, they could just give it to the people that had worked on the game and the engine previously (i.e. Obsidian) to finish, and release it in no time.

I'm guessing it would still take 12 months to finish up and run it through QA. I think I recall JE saying they were still 8 or 10 months away, that it might even take 12 for the full release. Still, 12 months is a hell of a lot better than a totally new development cycle for a top-bench title like BG3, which would otherwise take at least 18 months - maybe 2 years or more. Considering Atari's so-so fiscal health, it would be stupid of them to pass up the previous BG3 work if they can get it for a decent price.

yeah, JE said 9 months with a full team (10-20 people, varies with the stage of the game probably) and a LOT of luck. more time if you want it relatively bug-free.

something tells me you're right on that one... i think, btw, he actually said something like "really polished," but that comes across as bug free in my book...

I think the engine was called FR6, or something like that. Not sure what that stands for.

I think that the context of the "really polished" comment was that the dev tools were working smoothly and content was being created and populated, not that the game was close to done or even remotely shippable.

Still, if they were 10-12 months out from shippable product, then they prolly had a shit load of art assets already created. If a developer got those with the development deal, that alone would shave quite a bit of time for them.

True, working name of course, but it won`t be used again outside of Interplay, because of legal problems with Vivendi. So one can count with a new engine or the Kotor engine.

Just an FYI, I thumbed through the latest issue of PC Gamer (the October issue...in July) and I didn't see any mention of NWN2 or BG3. I saw references to Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, but nothing about anyone developing NWN2 or BG3. Once I've read through the entire issue though I will know for certain and post anything I find.

FR6 actually referred to the game... originally slated to be the 6th forgotten realms games it was surmised.

no, i was talking about a post mortem JE gave after BIS died... he stated it would take 8-10 months or so with a large team working hard to get the game out the door - presumably from april when they stopped till the planned december/january release. however, he followed up by saying that if they really wanted a good game, at least a year... i'm not sure where he posted that. ausir read it, too... any ideas?

not BG3... they are porting BG to the handhelds, NWN too. there was a press announcement back in the april time-frame though not the "april fools" mention from grok.

You're a month early. This issue has a note about the big D&D special that will be in the next issue. The cover story for this issue should be Dungeon Siege 2.

Yeah, oops. For some reason I thought I had already read the September issue and now that I think back on it I have no idea why I thought that. Sometimes it makes more sense to be fully awake before you post. The cover story for September is Doom 3 and August's was indeed for Dungeon Siege 2. Personally, I'm more interested in learning more about Sid Meier's next Pirates! game or Civilization IV than Neverwinter Nights 2, even though I can't run any current generation 3D game on my poor old machine (except Rise of Nations, though it's a year old now I think).
