That would be one Cloud Strife, ex-SOLDIER mercenary working for the eco-terrorist group, AVALANCHE.

Those SOLDIER types have some sort of heavy bullet resistance, don't they?

They're tough as balls, apparently capable of surviving normally mortal wounds short of outright damaging their brains or their hearts. As if that wasn't enough, they're fast and strong enough to either block or dodge bullets, whichever suits them. They are genetically enhanced commandos who have been exposed to Mako for even more enhancements, which is like a kind of green energy that resides inside the Planet. Mako exposure is normally very dangerous and has similar effects as radiation exposure except with more catatonia and mind-rape, so very few people qualify as candidates for the SOLDIER program. SOLDIER commandos demonstrate increased strength, speed, reflexes, durability, and pretty much everything else you need to be a real badass in a fight. Shinra sucks Mako out of the earth to use it in reactors as the most efficient power source ever, better than oil ever was. Condensed Mako forms materia, which are little colorful crystal orbs that contain the "wisdom of the Ancients", AKA the ability to use various forms of magic. The Ancients were a race of people with magical powers who died out long ago. They were also known as the Cetra.

Some more background: there are three different ranks in SOLDIER. They are considered property of Shinra, so they don't get military ranks, though they are impressive enough to be more or less one-man armies.

SOLDIER 3rd Class - the lowest rank in SOLDIER, mostly inexperienced ones who have yet to master the art of war, but demonstrate incredible combat prowess and are usually attached to companies as specialists for high risk missions.

SOLDIER 2nd Class - the rank attained by SOLDIERs who have proven themselves on the field and have enough experience to be considered completed projects by Shinra. There are also physical and skill requirements to weed out inferior commandos, making 2nd Class far more reliable overall than 3rd Class. 2nd Class SOLDIERs tend to be put in charge of squads of 3rd Class SOLDIERs for missions.

SOLDIER 1st Class - the highest rank. Only SOLDIERs who are in a league of their own in terms of combat aptitude and experience can earn this rank. While the first two ranks focus on functioning as part of the larger military machine, 1st Class SOLDIERs are considered true one-man operatives and are usually sent on solo missions that even squads of lower ranked SOLDIERs can't hope to succeed at. They are so incredible that even cooperating with other SOLDIERS who are not of the same rank tends to just slow them down. Reaching this rank is the dream of all young children in the world, as it means becoming a great hero (as part of the Shinra propaganda machine). Sephiroth is the greatest SOLDIER 1st Class to ever live, the great hero of the Wutai War, and not even other 1st Class SOLDIERs could hold a candle to him. 1st Class SOLDIERs have the right to veto any order given even by the highest ranked officers of Shinra, and also have the right to wear and use whatever they want in battle.

If we get working radio we will have some chance to buy some more time, if not we could try to start evacuating civilians.

    AB.

All I remember about this section is that the main party gets caught and Sephiroth kills everyone in the building who isn't them, so yeah.

I was going to argue against 1A, since I got the impression that spending time looking for the first aid kit was going to render us too late for any sort of action to follow, but since every single person has voted for it... Let it ride, homies.

We witnessed some crazy shit from least deadly terrorist member, i think that sitting this one through isn't that terrible idea. Next assassination attempt should involve at least one tank. I think that specializing into sniper rifles, magic or/and explosives will give us any fighting chance. We are outclassed and beaten, but not defeated yet. Still bandaging our hands shouldn't take much time.

Since F has the second most votes, does not conflict with option B (which won), and is a generally smart community generated option, I'm going to include it.

    Prologue Redux Part X

You hurry towards the first aid kit on floor 34. As part of being a lieutenant guarding Shinra HQ, you were forced to memorize almost every floor layout. You know exactly where it is, grab it off of the wall, and open it up. You pull out the disinfectants and the gauze. You apply the fluid liberally, gritting your teeth to bear the burning sensation, then wrap your hand up in some thin dressings and secure them with bandages. You used some scissors to shape the dressings and bandages to your hand and fingers and prevent the loss of too much flexibility in your fingers. That stops the bleeding well enough, even if the bandages are already dyed red. More importantly, you can now close your fingers without wanting to scream in pain. To help take the edge off, you grab some of the painkillers in the kit and pop a few of them. Now you feel like you can keep going, though you've probably lost a bit of lucidity due to the medication. This cost you two valuable minutes, though...

You trot over to some of your fallen comrades, grabbing their helmets to test the built-in radio. After a little bit of scavenging you finally find one that works. You strap it onto your head, a bit loose, but it'll do. You can hear the radio chatter of various troops screaming and the gunfire and explosions. You flip through the frequencies until you get to the one used for the guards on floors 60 through 70. "This is Lieutenant Westford, can anyone read me? Come in, anyone on floor sixty," you say.

There's a few tense moments, but then someone replies. "Lieutenant Westford, shouldn't you be in a bar drinking your sorrows away?" you hear a familiar voice say. It's the sergeant of your squad, Johnson.

"Sorry, I saw some nice tail and had to come after it. How's the situation up there?"

"Not great. The terrorists are on floor 57 and climbing. All of the men we send down there die, and all of the automated defense systems just get blown up. We've built up a big barricade on floor 59 to cover the stairs and are setting up a killzone, but that's the same damn strategy we've been using this whole time and it hasn't worked yet," Sergeant Johnson says.

"I can tell," you mutter, glancing around the floor you're on at the corpses as you grab another SM3 and slip it into your holster. "What about SOLDIER? Aren't there some 3rd Class bastards still here?"

"There's three of them here on Floor 60, along with just about everyone and everything else we've still got. Is it true? Is there really an ex-SOLDIER on their side?" Johnson asks, a bit of fear creeping into his voice.

"Well, even if he ain't, he might as well be," you tell him honestly. "They've got materia too, so don't underestimate the others. By the way, they've split up. One is in the elevator shaft, waiting to bust onto Floor 59 when the others get there. I bet the third one is on the emergency stairs ready to do the same thing."

"What?! You mean just one of them has been fighting his way all the way up the tower?!"

"Probably. So expand your killzone to include all three entrances. How is the evacuation of the executives going?"

"Poorly. The mayor refuses to leave his office, the president too, and all the others are acting like nothing is happening. They're crazy!"

"Maybe. Any word on reinforcements? SOLDIER's on the way, right?"

"Someone said they heard that the Turks were coming," Johnson said.

"They called in the Turks? Jesus. They'll do. Just hold out until they arrive. You got that, Sergeant?"

"You ain't in command, Westford. You're off-duty. You should get the hell out of here before they kill you along with us."

"Well, they definitely don't pay us enough for this bull. I'll have to ask for overtime for this," you say, partly a joke, but mostly serious.

"Hah! Yeah right. And I shit materia. Seriously, go home, Lieutenant."

"Sorry, I'd love to, but by now, it's personal," you say. "Over and out." Ignoring his further protests, you swing your rifle around in front of you and double-check the magazine and action. Still working like a charm. Time to go kick @$$. You are at such a time disadvantage by now that you are forced to sprint up the normal stairs, no time to waste thinking about a plan of approach or which way to go. Each floor feels like minutes, when it's really only a dozen seconds or so thanks to your intricate knowledge of the building. As you climb the floors, you can't help but notice the huge gashes in most of the soldiers, the environment, and the automated defense systems. The ex-SOLDIER clearly came through here. 50. 51. 52. You already feel exhausted and sluggish by now. You've been running around and getting the crap kicked out of you for about half an hour. You barely notice the smell of blood and smoke anymore. By floor 56, you are forced to stop for air, gasping. PT never prepared you for this.

"The enemy's here. Fire!" you hear Johnson say. Then all you can hear over the radio is gunfire, explosions, and screams. The enemy's on floor 59. You are too late. But all is not lost. SOLDIER is there, too. You just have to get up there. You force yourself to continue up, calling on your discipline as a soldier. Somehow, even though your legs feel like lead, you managed to climb the stairs and cross the floor to the next set. You feel like vomiting. You do, but only to rid yourself of what was distracting you and holding you back. You wipe your mouth and continue onwards. You're dehydrated, you figure. The sweat rolls down into your hand dressings, stinging, so you roll up the sleeves of your shirt and wipe your forearms off on the wall. You can only imagine what you look like right now. You move on. Finally, you reach floor 59, but it is too late. The fight here ended ages ago, and you can hear the fighting going on directly above you. The enemy has reached the final line of defense and who knows what's happening. You stagger forward, amazed at your own tenacity. You reach the stairs and begin to ascend them, then slip and fall on a puddle of blood.

You hit the stairs and slide down a few steps. You're fine, just a bit sore from the fall, but you can barely muster the energy to get to your feet. You hear more screams. You don't know how much further you can go with what you've got left, but you get up anyways and climb the stairs, one at a time. When you finally swing around to the second flight, you can see the bullets and flames flying when you peer up into Floor 60. You grab onto the railing and take your time climbing up further until you reach the second-to-last step and pause to examine the situation. None of the normal troops are still standing, and all the drones and turrets are destroyed. All that is left is the high-level combatants: the terrorists, and SOLDIER.

Those Who Fight (FFVII Battle Theme)

The blonde-haired ex-SOLDIER guy is currently taking on two of the SOLDIER 3rd Class troops in an extravagant sword fight. His tremendously oversized weapon allows him to knock his foes away with single swings, sending them flying if they parry him, which they often are forced to, due to his speed. It is clear that he's both stronger and faster than them, but they have the numbers and teamwork advantage on him. They expertly dance and somersault around him, aiming for his openings and blindspots as he plays keep away by taking advantage of his much larger and longer weapon. While SOLDIER swords are top-shelf works of metallurgy made to withstand fights like these, against that giant hunk of steel they seem like toothpicks. It seems like a stalemate to you.

On the other end of the room, the beautiful woman and the gruff black man are taking on the remaining SOLDIER, using teamwork and numbers advantage in a way that mirrors the other fight. The girl is jumping and flipping around and throwing punches and kicks to keep the SOLDIER distracted while the black man fires his huge cannon arm at the SOLDIER, hoping he can get a bullet in to wound him and essentially slow him down long enough to finish him off. The SOLDIER seems to have far too much of an advantage over them, though, and blocks the bullets with his sword even as he ducks and weaves around the kung fu strikes of the brunette girl. All he's doing is waiting for an opening to appear, and then he'll kill them both, and the black man can't have unlimited ammo in that gun arm of his.

You come back to your senses, still panting heavily, desperate for rest. You are in a terrible condition, but you have no choice. You have to fight. Right now, you need to give one side or the other an edge. It is obvious which fight is progressing worse. And it is obvious who is the greater threat here. Luckily, due to how engrossed both parties are, nobody seems to have noticed your presence... or so you think.

    What do you do?

    A) [Marksman] Shoot at the ex-SOLDIER
    B) [Marksman] Shoot at the black man
    C) [Marksman] Shoot at the beautiful woman
    D) [Stealth] Hide and rest/wait for an opening
    E) Other

You totally passed a fieldcraft (first aid), athletics, and a discipline roll here. Congratulations, the dice have not forsaken you.

A, take out the strongest guy. Don't want to fight a pissed-off ex-SOLDIER after we kill a friend of his.

Barret. Shooting at Cloud would risk hitting our own guys, and he'd probably just block it anyway.

Where do black people come from in this world, anyway?

Now I'm tempted to vote for a rest. We're likely only going to have one shot at this but wait too long and Cloud will probably take down the SOLDIER 3rd Class guys.

B this is so corny, but isint the black guy usually first to bite it. Besides Tiffa and Cloud have plot armor.
Or better yet E - Fire a full clip to the ceiling and inform the three they have been surrounded. :troll:

let's try take a breather while we can. I imagine that our aiming must be quite terrible after treatment of our hands and running at the stairs. Black guy might be stationary, but he is huge as fuck. I bet he can take some punishment without blinking a eye, unless we by some miracle manage a headshot.
