Crafting should be an NPC service to the PC. "Bring me these parts, and I will craft X item for you. It will take me one in-game week before X is ready for your use. Oh, and it will cost Y amount of gold for my service."

Having the PC manage a crafting skill is ridiculous, imho. Someone isn't going to be a godly warrior/mage/whatever AND a godly crafter. Focus on one aspect of the character (combat/social) and leave the crafting to NPCs.
