By your guess, it could come to blows if no one mediated between the merchants. To hide your intentions, you have asked one of the bystanders, "What happened?", the reply confirmed what you have already heard. And so, you have pulled at the reins of your mount and walked back, towards the back of one of the wagons stopped on the byroad. After looking around to make sure no one would see you, you have slowly pulled back the canvas hanging on the back of the wagon and peered inside. Unfortunately, you have seen nothing that you could steal.
