This is what bothers me about doing a walkthrough for the game. I am considering it quite a bit, but not knowing where the actual skill checks are is frustrating to say the least. They are definitely in there, but without replaying the game 20 times with different builds you'd probably never find them all.I haven't figured out if skills affect how you solve quests, either. For example, would Lotti Frankmuller come along quietly if you had a high level of authority or holy aura?
Shit like that makes me wonder, but I don't want to spend the time going back and re-testing that. I believe I've navigated an ideal way to get through Act 1 with optimal levels and loot, as well as having discovered most secret chests (even if I can't open or unlock in any way those faggot rocks at Tree of Death which are driving me insane to the point of assburgers).
Has anyone else figured out how to learn pagan magic, if you don't start with it? I can't find any books to learn from.
I imagine there will be a book somewhere in Act 1, probably in a secret container or behind a boss monster in a cave, if nowhere else. The other possibility is that they intended to keep it out of the player's hands so they couldn't use shatter and sixth sense, if they weren't savvy enough to take it at chargen.
I have found 3 books in the world so far, 2 infernal magic (1x @ herbarium orcs, 1x in a chest behind Rashgar) and one other magic, true faith i think, behind rashgar. My feeling is they didn't place books as loot very often.
That said, there are 2 secret containers on the tree of death map that I am totally unable to open (with shatter, magic sign damage or melee damage) which could possibly contain one due to the nature of their location thematically (I've found some of the loot to be thematically well placed). Otherwise, there are probably secret containers it will take months for all of us to find.
You're right about the difficulties of a walkthrough and skill checks. Lack of transparency is tough, I'd think skill would matter somewhat in whether a heretic will accept their arrest or not, but I've got a feeling the game is more linear and less skill based C&C than that, it would be a surprise for example, if Lotti turned herself in when you confront her, but I'd like to have been arresting her rather than fighting. Same goes for Romius. It would have foregrounded the torture/trial of heretics apart from MQ instances. The same goes for Suzanne the merchant in act 1, you can make her pay an indulgence OR just burn the book but you get no more significant outcome than that: where's my evil inquisitor choice where i torture her, confiscate her property then sentence her to death for personal gain?
So far I get the impression Codex and gog forums are the only anglophone fora discussing and playing this game in unison. I got into Act 2 tonight, so I'll keep bros updated as I find shit.
