Good call. Next time I'll stand on a damn shooting zombies beside a major roadway. Brilliant. Where's a good place to stand on scaffolding? I honestly don't think I've seen any yet.

Scaffoldings:

There is one in the junction point with a few buildings to the East of Mogilevka that you can reach by following the road to North from that dam in your video.

I hope they randomize the item spawns a little bit, kinda sucks to know what items can spawn in certain buildings.

I've played around even with 300+ ping, the ping is not a reliable guide, I'm played on Europe, Australia (ANZ 7&8 has no ping limit), USA, Brazil+Latin America, Thailand, Japan, Saudi Arabia, haven't tried Russia. Portland, Seattle are fast for me whereas Texas, New York and Virginia are poor, it also depends on the host in that location. Different servers also have different amounts of pking and retardedness.

ArmA2 engine has such netcode that even at 150 ms ping the game remains very playable.
It pretty much calculates the hit on your PC, not on the server.

Thanks for the scaffolding tip Villain, I have a plan to put it to good use.

As to ping, I can go up to 200ms on Russian servers from NA and it still works. Not sure I'd want to try PvP at that level. But EU servers at ~150 ping are definitely playable. Europeans can play just find on NA servers. It's not like the twitch days of Q3 or whatever when you wanted a 23ms ping just for that 'edge'. I was quite surprised myself, try it out sometime. The netcode seems really solid.

Killed my first person today. Was in the cafe in Chernogorsk picking over some loot when I heard someone fire behind me. Turned around and emptied a magazine of the shitty starting pistol into the guy in a snap decision. Guy runs upstairs bleeding, and I can see that he's sitting at the top of the stairs waiting for me because the blood stream is clipping through the floor. I'm sitting at the bottom of the stairs. Guy bandages himself and tries peeking out a bit and I empty another clip into him.

We later talked in chat and he said it was a misfire, which I can believe, because missing a shot at point blank range like that would be p unlikely if he had really tried to kill me. Now I look like a bandit, but at least I have a lot of phat loot.

I commited my first genocide earlier today. For some reason there were like 12 idle guys just standing around where I spawned so I clipped them all and took all their shit.

I'M A STONE COLD KILLER THERE'S NO TURNING BACK NOW

Just installing Day Z now, you guys got any tips for a newcomer?
I was told that it's a good idea to play the ARMA tutorial to get a grip on how the game handles, but is there anything specific on Day Z that I should know about?

Check page 2. Lots of useful hints in the image villain posted. Also, keep the map that was posted on the same page on alt tab (or shift tab if you're using steam and not playing the beta version)

LOL I found a group of five tents behind the hill to the North of the military camp in Stary Sobor. Full of awesome stuff. They are either morons or just set it up temporarily to loot Stary Sobor. I took what I wanted, set my own tent and stored my stuff in it, emptied all the other tents to the ground, repacked my stuff and logged off. All of their loot will have gone poof when they come back*. R00FLES!

*: Stuff you drop on the ground is discarded if there's nobody around when you log off. Otherwise, they will stay there as long as you are in the server, no matter how far you go.

Was it some empty area with no grass and trees, just hills?

Yeah. It's a glitch, right?

Yes. If you don't want to respawn when it happens, just go East. It will take 5-10 minutes of running but you will eventually reach the Western edge of the map. Follow the clouds, they always move East.

Another tip: you can crawl into tents. They actually shelter you from rain and prevent temp loss. If you are going around in the night, keep one with you.

And How To Pitch A Tent: You actually can pitch tents fairly close to other objects, so disregard the related game message.
  • Click the pitch tent command often while moving around slowly with the gear open.
  • But don't spam it, unless you want extra tents.
  • The moment you see the tent pitch animation start, immediately stop pressing keys or looking around (head movement is okay). Moving and turning around interrupts and cancels the process.
  • If you want extra tents, spam pitch tent command as soon as the pitch animation starts. Whether you succeed in pitching a tent or not, you will get extra tents in your inventory if you have the space. If your tent pitching is a success, they will go into the tent's inventory.
  • Sometimes, gear menu will close on its own and if you aren't careful or you're spamming the command, you will ending up firing your weapon. Therefore, I suggest dropping your weapons beforehand.
I wish tents were saved to character data instead of individual servers. It would also lower the server load, I imagine.

You truly are a villain. Of course Stary Sobor is a high traffic area, I was on that hill a few hours ago. That's a pretty moronic place to stash stuff. I haven't used a tent yet but when I do it will be in the middle of nowhere and probably on a server that is rarely used. Thanks for more tips, I'm sure it will come in handy.

I found the first 1.5 hours to be boring until I joined a group. Raiding towns in a group while watching out for bandits is fun. The zombies are boring and of little threat to me, as much as I hate pkers, they are what makes this game fun. Now that I'm experienced, I've been taking newbies from the coast on inland tours a few times.

AKM is an amazing weapon. Very accurate with zeroing up to 800m. One shot zed kills. Only moderate noise.

So what are your choice of weapons atm? I'm sitcking to AKM and M9 SD, the latter for close encounters with zeds while still undetected. And M24 when I go hunting players. Still hoping to find one of the light machine guns.
