because making a good game runs a distant second to making a profitable game. despite the market increasing exponentially in the last decade, the douchebags in suits with MBAs can't figure out the correct order for the two. they're used to producing mediocrity and counting on marketing to hype into awesomeness. sometimes it works; usually, it doesn't.

Deus Ex remains one of the more popular fps/rpg style games of all time yet rehashing the gameplay with updated graphics is impossible because they need to innovate?....
You're mistaken. That's an awfully low number after nine years. Make a Deus Ex-style game, get Deus Ex numbers, and what kind of big publisher would want that?

If people are still playing DX1 today they're doing it for a reason... if not the graphics... perhaps the gameplay? So why the fuck do we need "innovation"?
Deus Ex's gameplay is lousy though. Maybe they're just bored and like running around in a nonsensical cyberpunk world thwacking braindead enemies with their glowing sword. Eidos Montreal is just making the thwacking look busier.

Deus Ex's gameplay is amazing. Some of the combat is a little clunky, but that's ok because there are other things to do too. Much of it, is in fact, on purpose. They could have left shooting like it is in Unreal Tournament, but they didn't.

So Sqeenex is publishing this and that just gives them the right to include a man woman with tight pants and an emo cut?

Still if the actual combat hold this might be worth spend.

True, if you could immediately hit where you aim there wouldn't have been any challenge at all in the first level (the only place where it is challenging, until you find that laser sight mod and make a beeline for it in any subsequent playthroughs). To-hit rolls in action games where you aim and move yourself are a lazy and unnecessary way of making something "RPG-like" (it's been a while but I'm pretty sure System Shock 2 didn't have them and it came out a year earlier) and there are better ways of mixing character with player skill (handling and visible weapon sway, etc).

Here's a screenshot of the allegedly complex and engaging hacking minigame.

I shall let it speak for itself.

Nice looking interface. Actually it at least is looking like hacking. (While Hacker evolution, or similar would be more complex, it far more complex than Alpha protocol, or ME2 hacking minigames.)

It was a pure FPS. People who even paid attention to settings actually know why.
