You'll probably be glad to hear that Arkane Studio's upcoming Dishonored will save gaming in not one, not two, no... six different ways. The official playstation magazine figured that out in one monumental mental effort. It cares about story, for starters.
And we don’t just mean the narrative equates to more than the usual ‘one man against a global network of dicks’ spiel – in fact from what we’ve seen so far it kind of is that. It’s hard not to reduce a plot down to those terms when you’re facing enemies at every corner and killing them as is your wont. Where Dishonored differs is in its approach to storytelling – specifically, using subtlety and surrounding details to give you a better understanding of the plot and the over-arching lore. Grafitti scrawled in sewers tells the plight of the trampled masses a la Left 4 Dead. Tallboys chase after citizens for what appears to be no reason. Groups of cowering proles stand trapped behind forcefields called Walls Of Light. The Cityscape is an odd mix of opulence and ruin – all these elements tell you about the Lord Regent’s tyranny better than a cut-scene ever could.

And once again, I only find myself feeling further alienated by and distanced from the rest of humanity because these six things that will "save" gaming were the standard, not the exception for critically acclaimed games in a time not too long ago. This is great if you're marketing the game towards CoD players, less so towards people who already know about this sort of genre.

I don't think alternative non-violent solutions have ever been standard.

I think Arkane are cool dudes (and Ultima fans), but unfortunately they are trapped within the publishers that will fund their games. And the sheer fact in this case it is Bethesda, I really have no hope at all. I wish they could run the fuck away from publishers and go do a KS project, and do exactly what they want to do.

This article is clearly from a console perspective and should be titled as such to avoid misleading. Or are they too dumb to realize the fact for themselves? o_O

To be fair, it is written by the Official Playstation Magazine; I think console-centrism should be expected here.

At the back of your skull.
Uh... maybe i'm oversimplifying, but they could all be sumed up in "it's not a cod clone". Doesnt necesarily mean it cant be shit. Like everything is, according to an old codexian principle.

Fuck that. The author says "Gaming" not "Playstation Gaming" or "Console Gaming" and should be rightly gelded.

I think what the article is trying to say is that Dishonored will be a return to form for "high-class" gaming with its unique setting, originality, multiple play-styles, emphasis on non-linearity, and basically everything that makes titles like Deus Ex & the Thief trilogy rather than being generic, designed for retards console pop-a-mole shit that plagues the modern gaming market left and right.

I suppose. Whilst it isn't a terribly impressive game by a Thief/System Shock/Deus Ex fan's standards, it is an opportunity for some of today's kids to begin down the path to enlightenment and away from the undiscerning, complacent proles. Maybe I just don't follow the video gaming industry as intently as I used to, but I feel as if there aren't as many creative games for kids growing up on the current consoles versus those who grew up on older ones. They all either play Minecraft or immediately graduate to Call of Duty. The indie scene and flash games are always there, but in the way of "proper" games kids bring over on playdates and at birthday parties, I think Nintendo's the only company left for that stuff.

I don't know. Call me naive, but i still think this game has a chance to be a genuinely good sneaker. I don't really care for the assassin stuff, or magic though. For me the most important thing is how derpy the magic system really turns out and can sneaking around be viable without it. Nonlinear and interesting level design, that supports different playstyles and a competent A.I. will be as important of course, but i don't doubt they can deliver this, seeing who's involved.

What's the problem with Bethesda as a publisher? Call of Chthulhu, FO:NV, Rage, Brink... Which bad things did they force into those games? That's an honnest question. I thought they were an ok publisher. Not great but not bad either. Even the "scandal" about Obsidian not getting a bonus because of an insufficient metacritic score doesn't seem like a big deal. At least, from the point of view of the average gamer, they're no EA or Ubisoft. To my knowledge, they never used the worst DRM software (at worst, you have to install Steam). I don't recall their cancelling games at the last minute or imposing an anticipated release date. So, what's so bad about them?

Not a big deal? The fact that they allowed Metacritic, a joke scoring system, to affect their paygrade alone proves that they're just big business douchebags.

Obsidian agreed on those terms. Metacritic scores are used by most big game companies to settle bonus for their employees. It's quite stupid, but it doesn't have much effect on the quality of games or on player experience.

Like they had any other option(s).

If it encourages them to design shitty CoD Bethesda games to get those mainstream review scores I'd say it affects everyone..
