There doesn't seem to be much information regarding this release on the internet. Was this a day one limited edition for CD-ROM or was it to commemorate something after the game had already launched?

IIRC it was the normal CD box. This being the early 90s, and since the CD version came out some time after the floppy version, it wasn't going to sell a whole lot and not many copies were produced. I've seen it once but I've never owned it. I think mindx2 might have a copy though?

Nah, pretty sure it was a special edition, or possibly just a 'first edition' before they made more. There are a lot of normal square CD-Rom boxes (I own one).
