NWN OC only gave you control over you single PC.

Every infinity engine game gave you control of six characters and did it fine.

True. IE however not ideally, as in long battles it was becoming too tiresome.
But it won't be IE this time and I don't really see the point of having more than 4 party members.

IE combat was great, like a mini RTS! No RPG has gotten close since IWD2. NWN2 and Drakensang has similar combat, but the combat tactics in those games is nearly all about the appropriate use of spells and special abilities rather than positioning. I really wonder how dragon age will be, will it have great combat or just decent? The 4 character limit indicates positioning will not be a major issue...

I wish someone would go the other way and make an RPG where you can control 8 characters. That would give lots of tactical options!
