The scary thing is there are probably publishers out there reading this who will highlight this bit in yellow and send it on to their development houses claiming this is what the public wants more of.

Most people I know like PC games because they're different to console games.

Hehe, I'm not surprised that preview warranted a comment. That quote is practically a cockpunch to most of the Codex, and he deserves nothing less than a cockpunch in return.

Say what you want about BG or NWN RTwP combat, but I'd rather have that than some crappy attempt at copying the console action games. It is fun for about ten minutes but then becomes dull every time unless you can just switch your mind off, like a zen trance. The only way to stop you from hating the game is to make it easy and short enough that you will zip through in before the boredom kicks in. I've played a lot of console games and I like them, but I also know that it doesn't translate onto the PC well. The console ones work as they know what they are doing and have been doing it for years. They can make a good game in that style. The PC development studios rarely copy it well and in the few cases where they do make a good game (Anachronox), no one wants it. It's stupid.

A true action fighting game can be great fun as it is designed to be all about the combat, but tacking on a poor imitation never works and is ill-suited to the PC RPG genre in general. You end up with an action game with RPG elements.

This game had better be fantastic as it will be torn to shreds by all the obstacles laid out before it.

I say you're a fucking moron. There's more turn based titles for the consoles than there are for the PC, and that's the sad truth.

I don't mind if an RPG is going to have alot of combat and i don't mind if this combat is very action orientated but what i don't get is why this always has to equate to the simplistic and dumb implementation of other RPG elements?

If you're gonna have dialogue, why not aspire to the levels of Planescape Torment?

you can always accommodate the illiterate with "stuff this shit, lets fight!" options.

Why can't these fucktards just stick to reviewing nascar sims and doom clones, and leave the rpg reviews to people that actually care about the genre? You don't see many rpg'ers fighting to make the next doom turnbased, but these horse-fucking cocksucker mothefuckers (I'm completely high on the deadwood trailed from last night if you can't tell) are driven into a "told you so" orgy anytime an rpg developer decides to dumb their next game down for money. I feel like a buffalo or something- I just want to stand here and eat my turn-based grass, and all these 13 year old ass holes chasing me around with chain guns and uber micro, and all the people that use to run the buffalo underground railroad are selling out -and- making painfully delusional attempts at justifying it - "switching to a real time w/o pause system has allowed us to really increase the control the player has", etc...


Wow, that was better than therapy.

I don't how developers get away with fixed resolutions with all the lcd screens out there. I guess it must be on all the idiots who have convinced themselves they have magic lcds that can adjust the number of pixels on the fly and jump all over someone whenever they bring it up in a forum "You're LCD must be crappy, my 1024x768 scales 800x600 w/o any distortion at all - of course I have had a mysterious headache for the past 6 months". Luckily my lcd is 1600x1200 so 800x600 isn't distorted - I just have to deal with pixels the size of walnuts.

Seriously though, I doubt that they'll limit this game to 800x600. Unless they're making it for PS2 or Xbox simultaeously and dont give a fuck about us people that use a monitor.

I agree. I have tried Maximus Abraham Strong Something. It would be a great game if it was 10 minutes long.

Yes, because so many games that are supposedly RPGs released since 1998 or so have been turn based. What a breath of fresh air this game will be!

This guy is a horse's ass, and Dungeon Lords is going to suck as bad as Wizards and Warriors, unfortunately. Hey, maybe Dungeon Lords will have "great" voice acting like in W & W. The actor voicing the Samurai should have been given an Oscar for that convincing performance.

Well, despite initial misgivings, I ended up having a lot of fun with W&W. It was ugly, but it also had some atmos and some interesting quests and character dev stuff.

And I'll probably go against "popular opinion" and end up liking Dungeon Lords too. I'm good at mining the diamonds from piles of festering shit, too bad it gets my hands dirty :?

In most cases I win:
- Ends up being "good" (in the popularist sense) - me happy, everyone happy
- Ends up being "good" (in the - "I like it, I don't give a shit what you think" sense) - me happy, everyone else moaning, game gets liberated by zee zecret organization zat I am ze mamber ov. Mwuhahahahahahahaha...ve vill take over ze world!!!
- Ends up being "crap" (in the "fuck, not even I'm gonna touch that") - oh well, fuck.

Two out of three ain't bad :wink:

And the thing is I really wanted to like W&W. I enjoyed Wizardry 6 & 7, hoped W&W would be the spiritual successor. I just couldn't take the bugs, the lockups, and that awful voice acting. I prefer to read my text instead of having some washed up actor one step from doing a snuff film performed professionally for me. I recall some people of the Asian community being so upset about the bad stereotypes of the FPS Shadow Warrior, and yet the dialogue from the Samurai NPC was just as bad. It was one step away from "No tickey no washy, Honorable Ancestor."

I didn't get many of the bugs that people talk about - the only one that fucked me off was the one where you get caught in the underwater tunnel after fighting the green slimes that guard it. Clip-o-rama.

If you want truly awful voice acting, try Prince of Qin.
But I suppose at least these games (W&W and PoQ) have other redeeming values (IMHO).
