GameBanshee have a review of Dungeon Siege II, the latest action game we're supposed to take as a substitute for proper RPGs. The score given it 8.1/10.
If you like the Diablo series, the original DS or Sacred, you’ll probably love DS2. It really builds on the original title to allow character customization; not to mention the pets, randomized goody drops, endless enemies, and plenty of missions. But if you want to play a game that faces a growing party with distinctive and original challenges, couched in a creative fashion, with good writing and voice acting as well as interestingly devised combat, then look elsewhere.
If the combat isn't "interestingly devised", and the combat is the central point of the game, doesn't that make it a bad game? Ah, I love these postcards from bizarro world.

Yes
yay for more retarded score systems.

I'm curious what earned it that extra .1 to the 8.

That's the second review I've seen that clearly stated the combat wasn't that good but gave the game a high mark anyway. That's almost like saying an RTS is a great game even though all the units suck.

It's like a dog saying "performing stupid tricks for the amusement of my idiot master is great because I get a scooby snack."

Randomised loot and character treadmilling is great as a peripheral feature, but if it just serves to make the combat a bit easier, ie less of a challenge, then what's the point? Go collect art, records, coins, stamps, or something physical instead of accruing virtual affluence.

I guess it's time to unveil my new game scoring technique. I'll call it the P-whiz rating. Every game will be scored with the probability that I could have the same amount of fun randomly jamming myself in the face with an unsharpened pencil.

The combat in DS2 isn't that bad. Healing spells on autocast, mirror mode (F) for bosses and rampage mode (G) for swarms... it plays faster and slickier than DS1, a little bit worse than Diablo 2.

They nailed one aspect - the amount of loot is overwhelming.
