Yeah, I hate that shit as well. It isn't even a feminist/respect thing - I actually feel like the game is insulting my intelligence as a guy by insinuating that I'll ignore flaws in the gameplay or otherwise enjoy the game more because there's a fricken cartoon (well, animation but the point stands) of a woman wearing skimpy gear involved. Games just seem like the most absurd place for it - surely anyone, even teenagers, could just look up some porn if they really wanted. Hell, if they want they can play the game in a window and look up porn at the same time. It just looks so monumentally absurd.

It's particularly bad in games where NPCs are supposed to be important in terms of characterisation and plot. If you're desigining a character, how hard is it to work out that a major part of the way that character is expressed in a visual medium is the way he/she dresses and appears. By having a character wear a bikini and heels in a combat situation, or when travelling on the road (or even the random catsuits in ME2), you are changing the NPC's personality - she's no longer an experienced warrior/mage/whatever, suddenly the most prominent feature of her personality is that she is so moronic that she would dress like a pole dancer in the middle of a battle. Even without that, in real life a woman who permanently goes out in her underwear/ bikini (chainmail or otherwise) / skimpy outfit, for general day to day business, is immediately recognised as having severe psychological and emotional problems - you don't think 'sexy', you think 'how fucked up / neurotic must she be!'. Hey, in the unlikely event that they're actually writing a character that was molested as a child and has such low self-esteem that she can only value herself by getting attention through going out in her underwear in absurd contexts, then that would be fine. More commonly though, it just derails the character.

You see, isometric hack'n'slash is not a first person shooter. Overdone postprocessing effects like DOF or bloom only make models less noticeable which is a big no-no for that kind of a game. Monsters and heroes blending with the environment is a major mistake. Blinding player with flashes is another one. It seems that players will have to actually disable "new shit" effects to get a better understanding of what's going on which negates the whole point of having pimped up engine.

Subtle visual effects often read very poorly during gameplay. The Devil May Cry series, which I personally believe is a fantastic action series, uses extremely large visual effects and I think it works well for them. When you see Dante's muzzle flash from his pistols in motion and aren't concentrating on them, you might not notice that they are literally the size of his entire body. But yeah, they really are that big. When you have characters at that scale, exaggerating the visual effects helps the player more easily identify what's going on in real-time.

Best to pass judgment once you see it in motion I guess.
