You can play through the game using only one type of offense exclusively, but it will be an unpleasant experience regardless of what you choose.
The game by design encourages at least moderate focus on melee while at the same time leaving enough resources to focus on other skills to overcome various obstacles.
No, it's a form of support for your melee fighters. Enemies are too fast and the whole gameplay is not designed for this style.
I don't even remember notable ranged enemies in this game, let that sink in...
Same with magic only - just don't. In that case there were notable, nasty casters but you can't turn your character into viable, lone wolf caster.
I've never tried a ranged focused main character, I think it's not viable even on normal difficulty, your defense will be horrible and attacks much slower than with melee, and there is no way you can kill everything before it starts attacking you in melee. If you play with companions, then a ranged-focused companion is very good to have, especially for sniping enemy archers and wizards. Theoretically, you could focus on ranged on your main character and always have companions to buffer for you, but there are sections where you're alone in every chapter, and generally that sounds more like a weird self-imposed challenge than a viable strategy.
That said, there is no downside to having both melee and ranged weapons your main character (or any character, really), other than some weight and the cost of weapon. Engaging some enemies with a bow is easier than trying to sneak on them, and there is a few enemies that you won't even be a able to reach with a melee weapon.
Also:
Enemies with ranged weapons all have horribly low defense, so you should always use aimed attacks vs them. This includes your ranged attacks - even if your own ranged skill is very low you can crit them with every shot. It's much easier than chasing them down and potentially engaging more enemies once the archer starts running away from you. The same goes for your characters though, if you're engaged in melee and try to use a bow, any random orc will kill you in 1-2 hits to the head.
I looked into it, and there IS a way to set up Lost in Astral as a mod, but there can be 1 mod launched at a time, so no HD.
And looks like that version it's bugged. here's VK topic with links and dead accounts - https://vk.com/topic-99140_46548576.
Wouldn't recommend it though. There should be another way, I think. Gotta ask in their discord.
Also, turns out that english translation was made using machine learning, so the quality is very questionable.
Personally, I can't recommend the add-on to anyone - the quality just isn't there.
Keep in mind that it was developed as a free fan mod for the original game for a long time, but then for some reason the publisher picked it up and gave the modders a bit of money and technical expertise to finish it off and give it just enough polish to pass it off as the commercial product.
There are no notable bugs or glaring quality issues, but the add-on's fan-mod roots are clearly visible - very questionable design choices and amateurish writing make the gameplay barely bearable.
The writing is poor and unsatisfying, and the protagonist is a dumb and egocentric person.
The balance is skewed as to make the game more difficult (Russian modders, eh?), and as a result it exaggerates all of the more tedious aspects of the game while making the more fun aspects of the game less prominent.
And the ending... ugh.
If you want to get a "good" ending, you will need to complete a string of secret "quests" of a VERY tedious nature. And good luck with that without a guide.
Hey everyone, this post has caused me to dig up evil islands once again.
Im not interested in the campaign tho. Im looking for a specific multiplayer mod that I used to play.
I have searched for hours but I cannot find it. Maybe someone here can help out?

Ok thanks I will give it a try.
Is it normal that I don't get any gold for completing quests?
I just did the "brigands loot" one and only got some exp for returning it
It's a game rebalance as well as adds in a bunch of new things. Generally makes the game harder too.
A few of the main parts it adds is much higher mob density, and "light" respawning.
- The mob density feels much better now. Before you would have camps of like 5 guys, some major camps like the hunters had like 10 guys and that's it. Now you have like 30-40 guys there.
- The light respawning is basically once you do a set amount of quests for a specific area, it will introduce new mobs, or some other changes will take affect. E.g. a giant troll will spawn in that you can deal with, or not.
- More enemies like black wolfs were added in which you can use to make armor for.
- Enemies have seperate factions now, so sometimes you would find boars attacking wolfs, humans attacking wildlife etc.... pretty cool actually, makes the game much more dynamic feeling.
- Enemies in general have been changed/buffed.
- The base complexity/energy of equipment has been upped to allow you to start inserting spells into them from first island, at least make it more viable.
- More unique equipment can be found around the island.
- More perks for leveling and revamp of existing perks/stats.
So far I'm enjoying it a lot. Not sure if this would be good for first time playing because it might make it too hard, but if you don't mind spending extra time figuring it out on your first playthrough, then should be fine.
Seems to crash sometimes during loading etc... it looks like the fix is to disable all the shadows.
Sadly no new quests have been added, I would have liked to have seen more, but maybe the other islands have extra quests. So far I've only done the 1st island and about to start 2nd.
Pro tip: the tools quest, where you have to steal the tools back, you don't pickpocket the guy anymore, it's in one of the nearby chests that isn't locked.
