Magic... I can see why it's in (justify extra character class) but disappointing.

Combat didn't look very tactical to me. Every single melee strike hit for a consistent 30-40 hp. Player mobs each enemy 2v1 and steadily whacks them to death.

The only thing to do was heal that one guy who was almost dead, another soldier died but only because the player was an idiot and decided to have the cleric try shooting (despite 100% miss rate) instead of healing him as well.

Maybe this was a particularly boring example not representative of how combat usually is... if so bad choice for an intro video

AoD combat looks a lot better. Which reminds me I noticed several PC soldiers had spears/polearms but still went right up close to fight, is there no reach combat in this game?

Well there are other videos that showcase different things in combat. There are critical hits and flanking bonuses, but yes, a normal attack will usually do "normal" damage. There are also special moves/abilities that people gain as they get more experienced, opening up many more different attacks/moves. Also there are mechanics like "expose weakness", which can happen if a character is attacked, thereby increasing damage from subsequent attacks.

There's a bit more under the hood than you saw.
