It feels better to go nonlethal on some missions, something that would be tragic and cause the village theign's son to hate me forever and come for revenge is just turned into a wacky bonk on the head and grabbing the loot

As a side note, I saw here remarks, that only an axeman can wound Leofric (same on wiki: https://expeditions-viking.fandom.com/wiki/Leofric):
Your enemy also has one unit that will block like 95% of your attacks unless you have an ability called shield hook that disables shielding, which is exclusive to units that specialize in axe fighting. So your only way to defeat him is to shield hook (assuming you even have an axe fighter in the first place, which I was lucky enough to have) and gang up on him with all you got.
I whacked this fellow with Gugnir spear (I think I could also use Excalibur for that purpose).
He can also be killed/defeated by the old reliable combo of grapple + deathblow.

In fact, I'd honestly say knives are the strongest way to play the game now. Especially early on as eventually every non-dane axe build will become very powerful. Kinves just have the honor of getting broken early with a little cheap and easy to accomplish teamwork.

I've got a question, for the quest killing the rats, if I had chosen to go nonlethal in this case, would I be able to make them thralls

that seems like it could potentially be a mechanic but maybe not

Non-lethal reactivity is undercooked and intuitions like that generally don't pay off.
IIRC the "pacifist" solution to that quest is only available if you exiled or killed everyone at the farmstead earlier.

I wouldn't say "don't pay off". Normally, less than one in ten attacks will yield a critical hit. Critical multipliers are in ~1.25 - 2.0 range (but usually the better the weapon, the worse the multiplier). Assuming you use ~20 attacks that can yield critical per combat, you get something similar to one additional attack per combat for enabling critical hits. What follows, the difference between having it enabled or disabled is rather minuscule combat-wise, and I would rather disable it just to see possible outcomes. Admittedly though, if there is a benefit for non-lethal attack, it will usually be obvious before the combat - at least in the second part of the game.

It also results in you losing prosperity in return for a really, REALLY shitty amulet.

Just kill them.

the default difficulty setting was hard so I picked it, and I'm noticing in britain that my enemies have super juiced stats, and this is supposed to be the 1x stats

70 damage resistance is common, getting one shot with 120 damage attacks, hmmm

Is Conquistadors still the best Expeditions game?
Depends how you define the series. Viking is definitely the best RPG, but Conquistador is the best at actually simulating an expedition.

In Viking the companions basically stick by you no matter what because it's not practical to produce thousands of lines of unique dialogue only for them to leave or die early on. Conquistador reduces the importance of individual companions, bumping up the party limit (technically there is none) and having most dialogue activate from a general pool of shared traits like peaceful/aggressive. This means you get the full Oregon Trail experience. People die to disease or hunger, low morale brings about desertion or mutiny, and at any minute your fortunes can turn. There's a palpable desperation of being in an unexplored savage land that you're not going to get from the other games. They went in a different direction.

Best build is probably finesse perception, bow spam + daggers or spear

Axes are just satisfying

I've found a fun cheese strat

Poison weapon, on a bow guy who can throw rocks, 3 ranged attacks that can all cause poison
