Computer and Video Games has a rather lame interview talking about Fable: the Lost Chapters. In fact, the first two questions and answers might make you wonder if all hands were about the table where the guy asking the questions and Mike West were having cocktails - the kind with paper umbrellas in them. At least, that's the mental image I got from reading it. So, here's the good part:

Tell us about the, er... brothel. Do we get to become a 'pimp daddy'?

Mike West: Ah, the brothel. Any other game would go the easy way of just being able to become the pimp, but Fable is different. The pimp is certainly a career choice (there's even a pimp hat in the game), but you might not expect some of the ways you can get the deeds of the brothel from the previous owner. Of course, heroes who want some quick cash might find work there, and there'll always be some good hero wanting to close the brothel down and set the women free.

No self respecting hero would want to put so many hard working women out of work like that!

Well, duh, but they seem to put an overbearing emphasis on hats, much like Oblivion does with PATRICK STEWART!!!

And then the other review were they asked someone else from the team about new features, and he went for approximately 30 paragraphs about how uber the new hats will be. It just a weird thing to be pimping (no pun intended) about the game.

You'd be surprised how many people seem to think of hats as a selling point in spite of the fact that the game is pretty decent, hats or no hats. Remember the TOEE fan interviews? People kept asking for "JAUNTY HATS ZOMG"

Sol if you're a fan of Fable, it really doesn't speak highly of your faith in Oblibion....

Here's what my pimp in Fable is going to look like as he grows up.

I'm not a fan of Fable. The console version was weak. The PC version's a lot better, but that doesn't mean I'm a fan of it or anything. It's a fun 'in-between' game, but it didn't live up to all of Molyneux's 'promises'. He should have kept his mouth shut. It's a decent RPG-lite.

I'm going to be playing Oblivion for a long time, if it lives up to even half of my expectations.

I'm rather looking forward to Ovblivon too, it must be said.

However, to me Fabel stinks up the gaming world not just because it failed (utterly) to live up to Peter 'Fucking Worthless Spiv' Molyneux's bullshit. It's also a prime example of that destructive trend which has taken over popular music and film, and now most of gaming. It's design based purely on 'what will sell'. The tatts, the baseball caps, the 'u ken be a pimpZor'. Forget a world and game stemming principally from imagination or anything remotely honourable. Lets make a Fantazy world where the little shits can stick their middle fingers up. We'll stick 'em on paths, make it easy as piss, dumb the fuck down of the whole thing, and watch the dollars ROLL in, fellas! COR, LOADSAMUNNY! (quoting Molyneux talking to the Big blue box team) We'll even call it a RPG so that's what the little fuckers will forever think an RPG is! Brand the sucker's brains for life! YEAAAHH!

i held out till the end, trying to help get that POS fixed right up till they sold the dept. off to sony (those fucking vultures). MxO is a great example of what happens when you have smart, passionate people working under the umbrella of a worthless producer and a disconnected lead designer.

Now i'm sorta tossing about. i landed at a software test lab that pays the bills and now i'm just focusing on my writing skills. Most of the great folks i worked with scattered to the winds, some landing at Sigil, some at Bethsoft, some aking the risk and starting up their own studio.

So, i'm out of the games industry at the moment. But, luckily, i still have all my contacts so i can keep abreast of whats happening. Plus i find i have alot more time now to just *play* games. In the next couple weeks i'm gonna try to turn that leisure time into writing time as i try to turn a rough game pitch i wrote into a series of short stories.

And another good thing, i now have time to come back to my favorite site. I've missed you miserable bastards :)

I've missed you too. :D

There's a bunch of great games coming out within this month and the next, so you're in store for some nice games to play.

I agree. I have seen Sudeki and Fable recently. These console style rpgs are terrible. Unfortunatelly they will be the future.
An example of molyneux's bullshit: you can play your childhood.
The childhood was the tutorial. LOL

and ironically, the tutorial was the only spot in the game where they actually did the good/evil thing right. One of the guys on BBB checked the whole tutorial in without clearing it with the powers that be and it got to MS before they could replace it with what peter wanted. MS liked it and said it had to stay.

I find it sad that the designers there had to *lie and sneak around* to get actual roleplaying into the fucking game.
