Fuck, If I hear another person say 'I will buy it, even though I probably won't like it' I will shoot someone. Grow a brain, and if that isn't possible, buy one with all that money you seem to enjoy throwing away on shit you don't even like or need. :?

'Here Bethesda, I hate you, and your pathetic game that I will post insults about for the next several years....but heres some money anyway, you get my vote to keep on making that kind of game'

Seconded. Other than to review it for a site, there really is no reason to buy a game you know is bad and you know you won't get any enjoyment from.

You buy the game, they win. They don't give a fuck about how much you whine on the Internet, what matters are sales.

Keep in mind that the Beth internet fanbase doesn't actually know what it wants, and they'd probably be fine with not being able to join all factions, time limits, et cetera - they just rationalize those things as strengths or weaknesses because they like their games inarticulately and flail when they need a spot explanation on a forum. It's like defending your favorite food on the basis of its color. I doubt Beth takes any of that kind of stuff at face value.

I think the best case scenario is real dialog and deft setting, plus few or optional quest-compass "I play video games for thirty seconds every two weeks" casual gamer features.

That's why I torrented Shivering Isles, and that's why I will do this with all other Bethsoft games, too. If FO3 actually is similar to FO1 and FO2, then I might buy it after torrenting. But if it is the same crap as Oblivion, fuck them. They'll never get my money for such a shit again.

I don't like torrenting, so after release I'll wait a few weeks to see some previews of credible guys. After many years of waiting some weeks doesn't count. And I'm not interested in beta-testing anymore.
I'd rather make a donation to the Army of Health than buying crappy Beth-games again.
So I'll watch very closely before making my decision.

I should not get involved in that but I don't think that all the people who have been rolling on the floor, foaming at the mouth for the past three days on the Bethsoft forums have showed any originality either.

I agree. Buying it as soon as it comes out, even if is tempting (only the word "Fallout" can make me thinking about buying it...) would be a mistake.
I'll inform myself much better. I bought Oblivion and enjoyed it for 30 minutes, then I gave it to my brother... :|

I can only speak for myself, but I only buy games that I like, or at least have reason to believe that I will like. I’d love to only play games as good as the original Fallout, but where are those games today?
If my favourite food is not available, I eat something else rather than go hungry. It’s as simple as that.
And even if Fallout was good for a few replays, you can’t regurgitate it forever.

I was disappointed by Oblivion, yes, since it was less enjoyable than Morrowind. But I still found it entertaining enough to play it for well over 100 hours. The latest game I’ve played is STALKER. It’s a better game than Oblivion, and I palyed it for about 30 hours. It’s very difficult to measure enjoyment, but I would say that on average each of those 30 hours were more fun than each hour spent playing Oblivion. Still, Oblivion undoubtedly gave me more entertainment for my money.

There is a difference between disappointment from not getting what you expected or hoped for, and disappointment from not getting entertainment value for your money.
I guess that Gears of War, the worst game purchase I’ve made in years, is a borderline case. For the same money, I could have gone to the movies about ten times. But considering what they show in theaters around here these days I’m not sure that would have been a better choice.
Even if roleplaying is my favourite flavour of game, I also enjoy a good first person shooter. And there isn’t even enogh of them. (At least if you prefer single player games. I guess there is plenty of both shooting and ”roleplaying” to be had if you enjoy playing multiplayer online.)

Just to put things in perspective, I’ve made a list of games, old and new, ranked according to the ammount of ”entertainment for the money” I’ve gotten out of them. It’s NOT a comprehensive list or a ”best” list, the point is to show how comparatively ”lesser” games can give you a surprising ammount of entertainment. Honestly, I spent an insane ammount of time playing Doom and making Doom levels, so it ranks higher than Fallout here. And no game comes near Heroes III when I try to estimate how many hours it has eaten away from my life.

Heroes of Might and Magic III
Doom
Daggerfall
Fallout
Ultima Underworld
Age of Wonders II
Morrowind
Baldur’s Gate 2
Quake
Gothic 3
Oblivion
STALKER
Neverwinter Nights 2

:!: Edit: Note that the list is NOT comprehensive and NOT a "best" list :!:
The list is ment as an EXAMPLE, comparing the personal entertainment value I've had of some different games. The point being that when deciding if you should buy Fallout 3 or not, comparing it to other games available, rather than the original Fallout, is reasonable.

How can any "Grandpa Gamer" not have Civ on the list? You are a fake, I say. A mere whippersnapper.

Definitely a fake. I almost lost my first job playing Civ when nobody was looking. I couldn't stop playing, and when I wasn't playing I couldn't stop talking about my brilliant victories and humiliating defeats. It was a stressful time for my friends.

I clearly stated that it's not a comprehensive list nor a "best" list.
Neverwinter Nights 2 wouldn't come anywhere near my "best" list, for instance.
The games are just examples to be compared against each other, not in quality, but in some abstract "value for money" based on how many hours I spent playing them and how fun I had during those hours.

The point being: I will probably buy Fallout 3, and the game will probably provide pretty good value for money, compared to games like Neverwinter Nights 2 or STALKER, if not compared to the original Fallout.

 As I said:
The list is NOT comprehensive and NOT a "best" list.
If you insist, I would probably place Civ between Doom and Daggerfall.
Before anybody else starts complaining about a favourite game not being on my list, let me make clear that I have NO interest of trying to rank and list every game I ever played.

The list is ment as an EXAMPLE, comparing the personal entertainment value I've had of some different games, some new, some old.The point being that when deciding if you should buy Fallout 3 or not, comparing it to other games available, rather than the original Fallout, is reasonable.

You are the worst grandpa ever. Sod off you coffin dodger. You forgot Civ and that's like forgetting your anniversary or your wife's birthday on a gaming forum. You can expect to be sleeping on the couch for a while. :P

Are we talking Civilization I?

And yes, I always thought there was something odd about this grampa. Bryce is more convincing than that guy.

:D Funny thing is, when I first joined this forum, I decided to flaunt my age rather than hide it, to preempt being "found out" as an old geezer. If you think I'm younger than my Grandpa moniker suggests, be my guests. What bothers me here is the way you misinterpret my list.

In your age you should know that misinterpretions are an inevitable part of life, gramps.

I think Civ 1 came out before I realized that turn based games didn't automatically suck.
