Meh. They can do whatever they want with it. They don't owe you anything.

Seriously, what's with the sour attitudes, people? Obsidian making a FO game may not be every codexers wet dream come true, but it's still good news. Complaining about all the shit that comes out is fine, but when something good is actually on the way, it's sad that people still find things to hate about it. Lighten up.

Erm, it's the codex. People actually cry over this kind of news here.

Hopefully it will have a good story, NPCs, and dialogue.

Although anything that has to be readable on a console screen probably screws the dialogue.

And, please, less raping of the setting this time.

KOTOR 2 gave a spark of life to a bland, boring and cliche filled Star Wars setting. While your underdeveloped mind considers that rape of the setting, people with basic reading comprehension and reasoning skills consider it a radical imrovement.

This is great news. The biggest problem with FO3 was the writing, and since Obsidian are much better in that regard, this might actually turn out to be decent (albiet there's a good chance of it being bug-filled and incomplete).

Pfff. If you don't like Star Wars then dont' play SW games, but don't try to "improve" anything.

Maybe Blizzard should develop it?
Yes please.

At least they would do a decent job, even if the design wasn't want we wanted.

Sawyer, I hope you and your Obsidian guys do a better job with the setting. Fallout 3's wasteland was just terrible. Bunch of random towns everywhere with hardly any communication between them, no farms for growing crops or anything like that, no type of industry for bringing in income or something. Compare to Fallout 1-2 where it actually seemed like the people were putting some effort into building a civilization with all their casinos, farms and ranches, water merchants, caravans, mines, the rangers, etc.

Good luck with the game, I know I'll be buying it for sure when it comes out.
Why don't you just get on your knees Matt7895 and give Mister Sawyer a blowjob?

Oooooh Mister Sawyer, your game will be so good! I love Obsidian Entertainment, oooooh!

Oh crap, I missed that one. Matt, sorry, but the way you put that one up, it makes you sound like any gamespot/steamtard regular.

The fact that the game will use FO3's shitty engine and gameplay mechanics means the game will pretty much suck by default. No matter how brilliant the writing is or how talented the voice actors are, the use of FO3's gamebryo/facegen/whatevah technology means the lines will have to be delivered slowly so that the lip-synching matches and the characters' faces will not be able to show any expressions other than that bland generic stare.

A massive amount of stuff would need to be modified in order to salvage FO3's combat from being the atrocious gimmicky shitpile it currently is. Isometric turn-based is obviously out of the question since Bethesda is calling the shots and it would probably take too much time to implement anyway. The game is astonishingly clunky and unbalanced if you try to play it as a real time FPS (poor burst/single shot fire control, big spread cone regardless of skill/weapon condition, lame implementation of iron sights/scopes), so it pretty much requires you to use VATS every time you get into combat. VATS sucks because it is a cheap god-mode spell that gets old quick and messes up the game's pace due to its frequent required use. Add the ridiculous amounts of level-scaled hitpoints and the fact that weapon damage relies heavily on skill values and you've got a bunch of retarded scenarios like raiders taking dozens of headshots to kill, single rifle rounds doing more damage than grenades, etc. Not to mention it makes it necessary to have an abundance of ammo in a setting where it should be scarce.

It would be nice if weapon skills were modified to affect only accuracy instead of damage and to have level scaling removed entirely, but that's probably too much to ask for. As dumb as it may sound, FO3 would be fun to play if it were actually possible to play it as a regular FPS, especially if it were to follow Deus Ex as an example.

Oh and melee in its current FOblivion state simply blows. It's not even a viable alternative like in the originals.

What? Last time I played it was easily possible to punch people's legs off. Sure, it looked retarded as hell, but it did the job.

I think by "viable" he meant in terms of not being bored to death. Oblivions melee combat was pretty lame, and Fallout 3's is much worse. The "cast and fight" in Oblivion, while simple, did at least add some extra interesting options to a melee. As did the addition of shields and enemies who used them. But Fallout 3 lacked these, and was pretty awful for it. I'd take Dynasty Warriors or God of War over that...and this coming from a serious action game snob who hates both.

I mean...everything was "viable" as far as killing everything in Fallout 3. It was too damn easy even on the highest difficulty. Free i-frames available almost anytime (VATS) that you can attack in is bah-roken. As is the ability to heal and buff via a pause menu even when being attacked for absolutely no cost (which was also a problem in Fallout 1 and 2 as well...Tactics got it though).

For this game to be good, Obsidian will have to overhaul the combat, because it is fundamentally broken. Just tweaking numbers won't make a real challenge. Then they have to fix the broken character system, which was mauled by it's TESification. Next up, they have to bring at least their B-game to the writing and design ball game, definitely not send in the janitor to pinch hit as they did with NWN2. Then they'll be doing damn good. I'd love to see it happen, I hope Obsidian blows me the hell away and makes a game so good skyway will be singing it's praises.

But I've got my doubts. Obsidian's talented, but they've bitten off a big job. And then there's the business side of things. They have a brand reputation to uphold. Just like NWN, and KOTOR before, they're working with an established franchise. And too their credit, they deliver a similar experience for the fans in terms of gameplay. KOTOR and KOTOR 2 played similarly, as did NWN and NWN2. They aren't Bethesda, they don't "do what they do best" and screw the established franchise conventions; they keep them. So I feel we will be seeing a game very similar to Fallout 3. Not to mention they have a brand name to uphold. Like it or not, people associate the Fallout name with Fallout 3, and Bethesda wouldn't want to suddenly change things on it's customers who don't follow every piece of video-gaming news.

My prediction: People who liked or could stand Fallout 3's core gameplay will find exactly the first-person, real-time Fallout they wanted. People who couldn't stand the core of Fallout 3 will likely find a better written one with better quests, but the shit gameplay that drove them away.

edit: heh heh...unintentional one....

For now everything should go through Pete Hines/Bethesda folks.

I can see an official codex request for info going down well with Petey boy, someone should try though, just for the lulz.
