Arcane
So it's been five days since Rance X was released.
This game is a hardcore rpg in every possible sense. It's.... 100 times more difficult than Sengoku Rance? 10,000 times more difficult than Rance VI?
Anyway, the game is plain awesome and I recommend playing it immediately even with machine translation and not wait for an English translation.
So in this thread I'm going to post some general and advanced gameplay info, especially for those who don't know how to read moonrune. I'm going to avoid story spoilers although there might be some accidental spoilers. Also going to have a card guide as well.
Not sure how to organize this thread, so I will start with some general tips.
General Card collecting:
1. There are common cards, premium cards, and exclusive cards.
When you open up a chest, premium and exclusive cards will be revealed last. Also they have a glossy effect, while common cards do not. Obviously you want to pick up premium cards instead of common cards. Normal chests might have one or more premium cards (about 1:10) while better chests have more premiums or guaranteed premiums.
There are also some exclusive cards that you can't get from random chests. For example, most (but not all) of the Demon faction character cards can only be gotten by defeating (but not killing) the Demon boss character. These exclusive cards are typically found in the chest at the end of the route, in the chest after the boss fight. There might be other, non-exclusive premium cards in the chest as well, but usually only one is exclusive. The other premium cards are NOT exclusive.
UPDATE: You can pick up characters like Lei from chests later, so they aren't exclusive, just plot-locked.
Finally, many characters have both a normal version and one (or more) premium versions. For example, Miracle Tou have both a normal card and a premium card. Sometimes the normal version unlocks the premium version (Miracle Tou, for example), while occasionally the premium version is needed to unlock the normal version (Tillday Sharp, for example).
2. Duplicate cards and alternate version cards
Picking up a dupicate of a card gives that character a small power-up. Whereas, picking up an alternate character card gives the character a large power-up and allows you to use different abilities. Alternate cards of the same character use the same xp and levels. So keep this in mind that when you get an alt-version card, you are also getting a large character power-up.
3. Use Overkill to pop open normal chests
Try to finish anormal battles with as much Overkill % as possible, as Overkill directly affects the chance of opening the chest. Most chests won't open unless you have overkill by at least 15% or 30%. 30% will open most chests whle 50% overkill will generally open any random chest. The easiest way to achieve high Overkill is to finish the fight with a strong nuke ability like Rance's Rance Attack.
Boss fight chests and mini-boss fight chests typically always open automatically.
4. Many character cards need plot to unlock
Many characters' premium cards only unlock after you meet them in the story progress. After you meet them, they'll appear randomly in chests. For example, you cannot get Maria Tulip's card until after you meet her on a mission, but once you've unlocked her, her card will be available in chests like any other premium (or normal card). Another example is Kaoru and Wichita, which only unlock once you encounter Gandhi.
5. Don't prioritize characters from JAPAN
JAPAN will be one of your weakest factions initially. Most characters from JAPAN are Premium cards, so it is the hardest faction to collect. Very often you'll open a chest with a JAPAN premium character card and an exclusive character card. You should NOT take the JAPAN character card instead of the exclusive card. This is important since for many players who are mostly familiar with Sengoku Rance, it's very tempting to choose the JAPAN character instead of the exlcusive character, but that's a mistake. Build your other factions first, JAPAN last.
6. There are around 1,200 cards total
So don't worry too much about your completing your collection early on!
7. Some characters have abilities that improve the contents of chests (like no duplicates, etc...)
Using resources:
1. ALWAYS take medals.
Rance X is an extremely difficult game and you must use every advantage. Medals unlock VITAL bonuses, and many bosses cannot be beaten if you haven't unlocked those bonuses. Picking up medals is THE most important way to progress in this game.
2. Always use all your meal tickets.
Meal tickets are used to see each character's events. Mechanically they also give the character a large xp bonus, which is very important if you want to use a character in battle. You should give at least 1 meal ticket to any character you might use in battle. A lvl 1 character is quite useless if they need to attack. You need your main combat characters to be 3 star rank *** (lvl 20). A single meal ticket on turn 3-4 will give a lvl 1 character 10+ levels, so it's very helpful.
Keeping in mind that you can only use 1 character from any single faction, you should initially concentrate multiple meal tickets on 1-3 characters from each faction only. 1 meal ticket helps useful characters get to lvl 20, 2 meal tickets for your main 1-3 characters from each faction. 2 meal tickets unlocks the Nude version card of female characters in random chests, which is helpful since it gives them a large power-up as well, while 3 tickets (I think) unlocks a strong version of some characters.
Unlike medals, which convert to bonuses immediately when you gather 3, meal tickets are capped at 3, and any extra that you pick up are wasted. The game let's you save your unused meal tickets, but you should always spend your meal tickets immediately since many mission routes have 2-3 meal tickets.
You can also generate free meal tickets with Marina Curry's ability. So meal tickets are important, but they are also a plentiful resource, unlike medals.
General Battle tips:
1. Defensive Action button
On the right side of the battle interface, above the end turn button, is a button for defensive action. It allows you to spend up to 4 AP to reduce physical damage for 1 turn, up to 90% for 4 AP. You'll need this to use this button to beat several boss fights.
2. Party Switch/ Reserve button
On the left side of the battle interface (left of Rance's head in the picture) is the party switch button. This allows you to sub out characters mid-battle and replace them with a different character in your collection. However, this button is noromally locked until round 15 and can only be used once every 15 rounds. However, it is also an important tactical option needed to beat many boss fights, in case one of your characters becomes unusable mid-battle.
3. Battle set-bonuses
In random battles, you'll get large bonuses if you're lucky and draw a hand with 4 or more characters of the same faction or element. For example, if you draw a hand of 4 or more characters from Free Cities or 4 or more characters that are Fire, you'll get a large bonus. Sometimes you'll even become invincible! So it's always possible to win random battles no matter how helpless it seems.
4. Use Biscuit to change fixed Army battles to random Army battles
If you use the first Biscuit Burns character card, you'll turn fixedd Army battles into random Army battles. This can be useful to pass through some extremely difficult non-boss fights.
