I can also recommend "Der Langrisser" it's one if not my favorite game, the orginal SNES version, not the remake though that is a bit more coherent gameplay wise.
For me, it's Langrisser 2 on the Mega Drive. In return for losing the branching campaign present in the later SFC version mentioned, you get (a lot!) more challenge. Patched to restore the art from the Japanese release, ofc. (or was that the first game that needed the art patch and the second game that needed a translation patch? I forget).

While the Ogre Battle games aren't the same as Tactics Ogre/FFT,

I've played and beaten march of the black queen(the snes one) on emulator back in the day, neat concept but I didn't care for it.

Definitely going to take a longer crack at the shining force games, Jeanne d'arc and the fire elblem games from reading this thread. mediocrepoet I've heard good things about the disgea games but I'm not sure I can handle the art style.

That's fair. Fire Emblem games tend to be really good and should eat up a lot of time. Same with the Front Mission games like others have said if you like genres other than fantasy. FM3 was fantastic and I hope they remake that.
