I'm thinking about wether I should play Genefore 1-3 first or just go with 4 and forget about the other 3. On the one hand I'd really like to play the newest version, as people are reporting how it's his best work, yet, and how the incremental improvements from prior games really add up. On the other hand, there's basically not enough decent rpgs out right now to simply bypass as much as 3 games because they're rough around the edges.

So, if I go with GF4 first, will it spoil the others for me?

Ideally you should start with 1-3, but if it puts you off the series then you may as well go for the latest instead and enjoy yourself. If you go with GF4 then it won't spoil it all entirely. It'll feel like you're playing the events that make up the history and back story of 4. They all start with a fresh PC, although some NPCs do reappear and are name-dropped, but you'll have the fun of spotting them in 1-3 instead of spotting the references first in 4.

GF3 is skip-able, but you're really missing out if you don't play 1 & 2. Really.
