How would you rate VC vs GTA4? I've played VC several times before but the farthest I can get is the mission in which you first parachute down on an estate and then kill stuff and then go chase some bad guy on the road. That mission was fucking hard to me so I dropped the game there.

I'm fairly certain that this mission was from San Andreas... not Vice City.
Either way, both VC and SA are vastly superior to and are more enjoyable than GTA4

Yeah I meant SA. Never played VC too much because the pink theme and Miami 80's style doesn't do much to me.

There are ways to get GTA IV running properly, but the effort of making such adjustments may well not be worth for playing just a videogame.

GTA 4 has two things that rise it miles above the rest of the GTA games. Gunfights for the first time 'feel' right. There just is something meaty and nasty about unloading a shotgun on a foe. Then when you have mowed them down you notice their behaviour. Cringing in pain, trying to flee stumbling while holding themselves, pleeing for their lives and so forth. GTA 4 is as far as I know the only game that has spend so much attention to those you've effectively eliminated. Awesome for a murder sim.

Play GTA:VC instead.

VC is vastly superior. It has more varied missions and of course a better writing and characters to accompany it - full on that early-90s-b-action-movie atmosphere. And it's set in Miami, yes.
Shooting sucks as in every single GTA game, but what makes VC (and SA) better than GTA4 is that the game makes you do stuff sometimes crazier than in aforementioned movies. GTA4 fails there (although it has a few good quests in that vein of its own)
Also VC has the best voice actors cast out of all GTA games - just check IMDB - the list of actors is beyond awesome.

Also, what's your guys' average FPS on GTA4? After some messing around (disabled shadows, lowered viewing distance) I've managed to bring up the average FPS to 25~30. But still feel a bit stuttered and definetly not smooth like games like Prototype.
GTA4 PC port is an utter shit. There is no cure.

You haven't seen shit until you've seen the Saint's Row 2 port. GTA4 is simply 75% CPU bound. I average 45FPS at any resolution on an 8800GTS (512mb) & 2.66ghz Core2Duo.

Oh, and if you do have an xbox360 get The balad of Gay Tony. That expansion/dlc gleefully returns to the whackiness in mission design of Vice City. It's a fabulously fun ride.

The gunfights 'feel right' only if you completely ignore the fact that the game's "cover system" is complete and utter crap.

I dont know. I really enjoyed gta IV and finally they got driving and shooting right. It doesnt have the VC atmoshpere but I think its still a very good game unlike SA which imho sucked. Well, it had to suck. The main character is a black man.

Don't use it and leave this cover system for consoletards. There is zero need for it in pc version with mouse aiming.

Yes - the only thing that GTA4 did better than previous console GTAs is controls for once. But mostly due to GTA4 using less buttons and combinations of buttons on the gamepad.

Bull. Gunfights, driving, world, pedestrians, internet, missions and ofcourse graphics are all much improved.

This is like volourn saying that DA is better than BG 2. All that is irrevelant if the game just has no soul.

Soul. Suddenly soul has become the most important aspect of a game? Fascinating. Now what exactly would you mean with soul? How would you describe soul? In what way does soul partain to GTA 4?

I called it soul exactly because I can't describe it. I don't know, the game feels empty, hollow. You may not feel it but I did with GTA 4 and DA. Despite being technically superior to predecessors they just fail to provide me that good feel I get when playing a great game.

Not just with the technical aspects, also the atmosphere in GTA 4 was for me much better than with SA or VC. The game felt so much more alive than its predecessors. Oh well, to each his own.

In fact, it very much was more alive than most games I have known.

Angry commentators on radio, conservative newspapers saying that the mayor is homosexual because his policies resemble that of one (when the mayor actually is a homosexual), third-rate reality shows being advertised every three seconds, streets and arcades shining with stuff going on all the time, people calling you on the mobile phone to ask to do dumb pointless things, fitness fanatics jogging through parks, and so on.

It allowed me a glimpse of the capitalist western industrialised society, which I just never got to experience from my uneventful commie wasteland.

GTA 4 had plenty of "soul", it just was less over the top than previous games, which a lot of people don't like. I for one think it has the best driving, shooting and writing. And isn't driving and shooting what you do in GTA games most? Seems like an important improvement.
My favorite is SA because I think it did sandbox best, or at least I liked it best in SA, but it doesn't mean GTA 4 didn't make any steps forward in other areas, which combined with sandbox aspect of previous games would make for even better sequels.

That's all thanks to Euphoria. It must be really expensive software considering how so few developers use it despite how much it does for realism.
