<A href="http://www.videogamenews.com/">Video Game News</a> offers up a whopping <a href="http://www.videogamenews.com/wconnect/wc.dll?wwdemo~REVIEWLEFT~0000001657">four paragraph review</a> of <a href="http://www.silverbackgames.com">Silverback</a>'s action game, <A href="http://www.harbingergame.com">Harbinger</a>. They gave it a <b>thumbs up</b>, saying the combat is as dull is cutting cellulose based food with a spoon but it's also fun at the same time.

<blockquote>Harbinger is a lot like Diablo. Except in Harbinger you are in space rather than your typical fantasy. Harbinger copies many aspects of Diablo almost to the letter. I'm not sure if it's based on the Diablo game engine, but it appears to be. You can put that into some perspective, in that Diablo II is already out, and had a number of improvements over the original title, and that was over a year ago. So one can think that Harbinger is a bit dated, and in the game-play department, that would be an accurate description. Of course, there are thousands upon thousands of people who enjoyed Diablo, and it's successor, so why wouldn't they enjoy Harbinger? I think they would. It has the same simplistic game design, and the game is easy enough for a fourth grader to play through to the end. Plus it has the kind of interesting, long to expose, and well laid out story line that RPG gamers crave. It's not earth shattering, but it serves it's purpose to entertain.</blockquote>

Here's why: Because <a href="http://www.blizzard.com">Diablo 2</a> has a great skill system and offers more depth and customization for characters. It's got random dungeons, random creatures, and multiplayer.

.

And it is currently a lot cheaper than this pig in a poke, too. Diablo II is cheaper now, too.

So a bigger price for something nowhere as good as earlier titles except maybe graphics.

Someone should tell the morons at VGN that their math is off. It's because of shitheads like that the gaming industry is going to hell in excusing sloppy hacks.

If harbinger had offered a better character system, it would have lead to less simplistic gameplay. That's where they screwed up.

The problem is that fire, run, run, fire, fire, run is pretty much the mainstay of this game. Diablo 2 trounces this because skills actually allow for doing so much more with things like the Barbarian's leap attack, whirlwind attack, and so on. Even the passive skills add options to building your character and influence how you play the game.

Since Harbinger was developed after Diablo 2 has been out for a few years, Silverback should have upped the ante and incorporated more than just the most basic things that Diablo 2 did. Trying to sell what's basically Diablo 2 Lite Lite for $10-$20 less than most games really doesn't cut it.
