You could have just activated the CD key from the box in the Linux version of Steam (Games → Activate a Product on Steam…). And even if you had to go through the Installer, Steam runs under Wine and once added to your account you should have been able to install it on any other Steam install you are logged in without moving over a game backup.
I know that now, grizzled and wizened. What can I say?

Yes, Half-Life 2 suffers from being a Source-engine physics tech demo.
Indeed. The Source engine is great technology. I wish there was a good game for it.

I liked HL2:Episode 2 and Portal, though.

I also do admit that I'm rather fond of Half-Life 2: Episode Two.
