Is this something that this site would be interested in? We'd have to go full autism on this one, but I have been thinking about this more and more. If there already is a good database, I would love it if someone sent me in the right direction. I checked the games section of the site, but that isn't exactly what I had in mind.

Otherwise, I would love it if I could get to create a thread where only interested members are allowed to post and update such a list.

I think this could be useful if it was possible to link forum threads to entries in the database and display relevant information. Or at least front page newsposts.

One could link to threads, or whatever else you can find about games not actively talked about, be it YouTube videos or articles.

Tagging shit is super useful these days indexing things.
Also, you may want to try using ChatGPT to try do do some of the indexing for you. May save some time now that this is a potential option.

What would be the point of this over more generalized game databases like mobygames or the ogdb?

We could comment on the games for posterity of future CRPG nerds that delve into the Dex.
A roloDex if you will...

Grauken has a point.

Abu Antar The thing is, this site is a volunteer enterprise and anything that requires constant upkeep is in danger of being abandoned if it's too much of a hassle. You've proven yourself to be diligent, but what I'd do if I wanted to have a Codex database is have the ability to automatically generate an entry for a game based on data from Steam or MobyGames or whatever. Which we could then modify if we wanted to.

The databasing of all RPGs should be easy. You can just easily scrape that together from the many other avaiable databases as you mentioned.
It's what's done with it that's interesting.
Normies initially come here for deep information into RPG stuff and then stick around if they find useful stuff (thus beginning the terrible metomorphic process of becoming a Dexer but that's another story...).
Have each game have title card, a community rating with attached reviews section like Steam, but with just Dexer's hot takes rather than the hoi polloi gamers. Just the basics at first to ge things going, then add more utility from there as discovered.

Grauken I don't know. This could be completely meaningless. If there's no interest, or too much hassle to do, it is not a big problem. I'm just throwing out an idea.

Infinitron Your suggestions are sound, but the control freak in me prefers to do things manually. It's not right, but it is how I am. On the other hand, if what you suggest works, I'd be down for that, too.

If this does not happen, can I have that thread? I'd just do it in regular posts, updating as I see fit.

I thought your Upcoming and future role playing games thread was already pretty much that.

That's an upcoming games list. I want to go full autismo. I want to log everything that I can. No need for a sticky, either. I don't even care where the thread is put.

At worst you get bogged down with endless discussion of what constitutes an RPG and what to include or not
Verisimilitude.
Compare various databases of RPGs and see which ones have the most frequency, then cut off the extreme long tail/fringe.
This will give you a pretty and manageable good consensus of which RPGs to include without getting inundated with subjectivity filibustering.
Plus kinda makes the Dex the authority on RPGs this way since we are closer to the truth than other sole databases.

Just a list or are you thinking of adding more to it, like tags for the games (type of combat, etc.), or more along the lines for codex like linking threads to games, etc.?

Was surprised this wasn't the first reply.

It's a nice idea, but you're going to have to contend with that. And probably further debates about what constitutes a <sub-genre> if you want it to have a practical application beyond a timeline of releases.

Yes but more organized and not made by steam normies.

It's the first thing I'd expect from a site called "rpgcodex", every cRPG cataloged and info

Or maybe I'm misreading the post as to what the catologue purpose would serve.

Eh, I'd just add any game that seems relevant to the database. It doesn't cost money. The limiting factor here is the amount of work you're willing to do, not genre classification.

I'm sure there's enough autists to make it happen , i know I'd spend time on it, considering I'm already translating and let's play a game no one gives a fuck about or even knows

Look at my upcoming rpgs thread. Like that, but with more info. I already have tags there, but I would copy descriptions like on the Steam page, and maybe a screenshot or two. Release Year(s), systems, developer (maybe publisher). Not far from the Steam page that you posted.

To me it more seemed like if it was actually useful and considered valuable by people on the site, it would seem likely enough that a contingent would make it their mission to "correct" things.

What would be the difference then between steam, or other databases , and this project? I guess with codex content it can be a lot better if they can be connected to threads, has their reviews, news posts, discussions, etc.

The more I think about it, the more it sounds like a games steam page but can be made way better and by people who care about the genre (and would require a lot of autists to do so mamual work because otherwise it's just some other normies database)

I would probably list to codex threads/reviews where applicable. I'd do it all in alphabetical order, and there a lot of games not on Steam, GOG, and so on. There would be no future games in the database. They would be added as they release. Links to popular mods, patches could be a thing.

Give me a thread in Prosperium, and if people like a preview version, one could move it to general gaming. I would at least want to try.
