I'm open to any and all suggestions. My repertoire is virtually non-existent, so I have no doubt y'all can oblige.

The only oldschool cRPGs I've played are:
  • TES II: Daggerfall
  • Fallout
  • Fallout 2

Dark Sun: Shattered Lands -- This game has a decent story, an interesting world, dungeons that have a lot of flavor, and a combat system that's fun to play even if it's not too challenging after a while. Basically this game got most things just right.

Darklands -- Options, options everywhere. There's a lot of skill based gameplay, it's easy to become infamous or famous to one extent or another in various places and there's shit to do everywhere. It can be pretty bland, but it's still fun to have an encounter with some bandits and have a whole load of options like convincing them that you're one of them or using some alchemical compound to distract them.

Ultima VII -- Tremendous world. I've never taken the time to play it all the way through, but there's so much to do and so many places to discover. It has retarded combat, though.

And I guess if you consider Fallout 1 & 2 old-school, then Planescape: Torment probably counts too.

The only one I would add to Fezzik's list is Betrayal at Krondor. If you like U7 I would give IV a go too.

Play them again.
I actually just tried to, but since I switched to Vista it won't work. Worked fine on XP.

I exhausted the hell out of those two games, though.

Bard's tale. Wasteland. They're from the 80's. Old stuff. Will get you e-cred. Or e-peen, whicever you prefer.

Also, Wasteland at least is a good game. Haven't played Bard's so can't say anything about that though.

Okay. I took three suggestions at random and put them in a poll.

Nope. Can't say I've ever operated on someone named Brian.

Sorry.

Dungeon Master is my childhood favourite. You can find a remake in java quite easy.

Realms of Arkania, maybe Lands of Lore. Definitely check out Wasteland and also Ultima Underworld. If you're a real man then you'll have the balls to play through Wizardry 4, Wizard's Crown, and Knights of Legend.

Also, Gold Box titles. Quite a few good choices in that brand alone.

Wizardry 8 is pretty much pure concentrated oldschool in modern package. Also, it has furries as playable races.
If fallouts are mentioned, PS:T is a must-play too.

As for non RPGs, what's yer poison? As I can recommend quite a bunch, examples:

Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri - PA simulator

Frontier: Elite 2 and Frontier: First Encounters - open ended freelance space sims with unparalleled scope (whole galaxy), scale (1:1 planetary systems), realistic physics (Newtonian flight with relative frames of reference and gravity included, astronomically correct solar systems with orbiting bodies) and seamless planetary landings

Codex 2014 PC RPG Website of the Year, 2015 Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Divinity: Original Sin Torment: Tides of Numenera Wasteland 2 Divinity: Original Sin 2
PS:T and Arcanum would both be good picks. But you'll probably have trouble running any game over 8 years old on Vista.

I really don't know. I mean, I really enjoyed AoE: AoK. I like strategy.
If you like 4X games, I heartily recommend both Master of Magic and Alpha Centauri. Both are just plain awesome.

Planescape: Torment for certain. You could also go for Might and Magic games (Not 9 though!) if you feel like first-person that's not quite as hardcore as Wizardry. It does have some retardedness in it though, like FIGHTING THROUGH A FREAKING THRONG OF BLACK DRAGONS OMG WTF, but that's endgame for you.
