Still having to negotiate the text entry/edit screen in all white, with white, like the opposite of being blind. It's getting frustrating. I have to go back and highlight everything with my mouse in order to correct any spelling mistakes (not that I make many, but still).

Fix. Now.

My issue is that I can't upgrade until our IT dept makes it happen, and I think IE8 happened within the last two years. Poop.

Just use a portable browser, in either Firefox, Opera, Iron browser, or many other varieties. No need to install anything, it can just be put on a USB stick, or on a random directory.
