Japan will make the first videogame to make use of this.

Needs more bloom.

Also: Porn. People will be able to make things that break the boundaries of even SWAP.avi.

That Emily looked pretty real, but I just don't get it. I mean if the goal of computer games is to make characters look real like Emily, wouldn't be easier and cheaper to just use actors? There were games like Phantasmagoria made over 10 years ago which used real actors and you sure didn't need to have incredibly powerful computers to play it. Here is an example for those who never heard of this game:

Besides, where will the charm of games disappear when every game will look as real as real life? I just don't get it.

Yes, but can you shoot her and then rape her guts? As far as I can tell, that's pretty much the point.

If I remember correctly there is rape in the first Phantasmagoria. It looked pretty awful, because of bad acting. What's this obsession with rape with some of you guys? Sheesh...

There is? I knew there was a lot of suck in that game, but I didn't realize rape was included

Also, I prefer to call it surprise sex

Also in second Phantasmagoria there is a girl which ties you up and whips you, and then a weirdo that looks like Data from Star Trek shows up and gives you a big wet kiss. I am sure this qualifies as 'surprise sex' ... being whipped by a girl while Data rapes you

Her eyes and mouth look weird. And not weird as in, ugly-weird. Inhumanly weird. Disappointing.

also they did not show full body animation but only her sitting in the chair. to me the big whoop is analogous to those face shots they did for oblivion and then boom try watching your character run up a hill.

They claimed most people said they believed the eyes were real... Myself, I couldn't help but notice that something was wierd about the eyes.

Let's put it this way. If you didn't know Emily is not real, would you still notice those weird things about her? I sure didn't, until started paying great deal of attention on small details.

Even if the Japanese use it first in a game, they'll fuck up the effect with manga face.

Anyway this had to show up sooner or later, after all it's just more detailed motion capture applied on face and combined with standard MC on the body. It's actually strange we had to wait over 10 years since introduction of motion capture in video games for this technology to surface. 2, 3 years and it will become a new standard in video games.
(Except for Bethesda, but maybe at least they'll have dynamic shadows by then).

Inhumanly weird.
They hit the uncanny valley pretty hard.

I think they should stick with "pixelated" graphics for now. But then again, they like anime,so they'll have no problem with ugly...

I'd tap it.

Also, as has been said, the Gabriel Knight 2 and Phantasmagoria style of games successfully did the same thing quite a while ago, and the basic "WOOO" factor in this particular rehash is nothing more than the imershun of lifelike full 3d enviroments & people, which just doesn't do much for me because I've seen it... :spooky music: ....IN THE OUTSIDE WORLD!!

David Cage's Heavy Rain gave me more thrill than this "oh so perfect" technology. (I'm only talking about graphics here since we don't know much about this game other than its predecessor sucks)

I.. don't get your criticism. I watched it 5 times now and I don't see anything fake about it. At all. I can't tell this from a real face. Perhaps it falls apart in higher resolutions or they use unfair tricks, but it damn sure convinces me. But I suck at dealing with people, so... (still, makes me the perfect audience...)

(The Heavy Rain movie on the other hand sucks. Did they even try to move her mouth?)

The reason it falls apart is not really because of the mesh; I'm sure the mesh was as perfect as could be. The animation, however, does not initiate motion but instead simulates prerecorded movements, and the conversion, while alot more lifelike and fine-tuned than what you get with a dot-based system (not necessarily, since fine-tuning is done by animations with a varying degree of professionalism), still turns out sterile and with a slight delay to movement, specifically where eyes and skin around the eyes and eyelids are concerned. The mouth managed to look weird and overly accentuated at times also, and while I'm sure the employee who acted test subject for this particular conversion was instructed to give slight exaggeration to her movements for the benefit of the recording, there are still notable movement errors in the mouth area that are not attributable to that assumption.

I'm not listening to the audio so i can't tell how well everything syncs, but if i saw this little clip with no foreknowledge I'd think I was looking at a girl with an awkward way of speaking (maybe covering weird teeth) or some kind of nerve damage, rather than an animation.

That one's extremely bizarre too.

"Why would you want to create a computer-generated photo-realistic animation of a person when you could just film the real thing against a green screen?"

Have you ever seen green screening in games? It looks awful. And it's impractical. If we never pushed mocap forward, we'd still be playing Pong.

LOLz. Even creepier seeing the interest this shit stirs up. Given the choice I would prefer human every time, who wants this kind of future?

It doesn't bother me really. A computer-generated female would probably have more personality than most real females anyway.

the video looks like they slapped a badly animated computer generated face on some real actor, and that's supposed to be impressive?
