According to Gamespot the overall score is 8.9 and 8.4. So if you were thinking of spending your money on Gothic 3 or NWN 2, think again. A bunch of addons are, apperantly, generally better! Imagine what the real game must be like! In fact, this "expansion" is better than many of other RPG. Dont waste your time with Bloodlines or Arcanum, buy Knights of the Nine instead!

But seriously, why is it reviewed? How can a bunch of quests with no new content have such an amazing score?

This is a mystery shrouded in lies, a concpiracy of the highest order! Honestly though, are *all* of the reviewers so idiotic? Or can Pete Hynes actually bribe everyone on the internet and their grandma and get away with it? It doesnt make any sense.

They're not saying that an expansion pack is better than a full fledged game. They're saying the expansion pack has a given value as an expansion pack, not as a game. That Hordes of the Underdark ranked higher than Temple of Elemental Evil doesn't mean Gamespot thinks HoTU is a better game than ToEE, they just think HoTU is a good expansion pack - and better than Shadows of the Undrentide (all this as an example; I'm not using Bioware's titles for any specific reason).

While I disagree with the overall rating - and I definitely do, seeing as how one doesn't even need to look that hard for actual free, quality mods - it would be pretty disingineous to assume they're using that kind of review standard just because an expansion pack scores higher than a game.

"Slightly" off topic, swedish PC Gamer gave it 50%. Compared to the, I believe, 93% the original was awarded with that's a huge drop. The reviewer even goes on for a while about how shallow the original became after the first few hours. Though, the rest of the staff still seem pretty hooked on it.

To be fair, don't the user made mods tend to alter gameplay (UI tweaks, no psychic watchmen, no level scaling) whereas Bethesda is offering its fanboys new game content?

Role Player nailed it on the head. It's like how the Sam & Max stuff are getting 8s across the board for their 3 hour long games. They cost 9 bucks so they're getting judged on that basis.

Still, Knight of the Nine are just a couple mods and random quests so I'm not sure how its getting good review even as an expansion or addon.

That is because they don't want those hackers(modders) making new things that will compete with their HORRRRSEEE ARRRMAAAAAHH. They gimped the mod tools for a reason.

MOST of them do, but there are still more user-made content mods than Bethesda-made ones - and, though I haven't tried any, I'm willing to bet there are bigger and better quests than Knights of the Ni out there. Fuck, Muffinwind was at least three times as long as Knights of the Ni, and I wouldn't have charged for it even if I could.
