RPG Vault has posted Diary #5 for the in-the-works Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. This time, Lukas Kristjanson of BioWare is attempting to justify "magical items" and "artifacts" in the Star Wars based CRPG. Here's a bit:

It is not only possible, it is highly likely that unique weapons and other items have been produced and then forgotten over the millennia. The variation could have stemmed from a little known species that knew the secrets of coaxing just a little more power out of their droids, or from the customizations of an ingenious bounty hunter who liked his targets to die quick (but wasn't quite so good with jet-packs). Equipment in the Star Wars setting has always been represented as very personal and distinctive, like crankily unreliable getaway ships, or the lightsaber of a Jedi who has just completed training.

So, we got D&D rules and now D&D style ancient weapons of ultimate doom.

If they just were discrete about it, it wouldn't necessarily have to be bad. However, knowing Bioware...

Want to bet which light saber color ís the strongest? I'm placing my caps on green, going by the logic: Red beats blue, green beats red. Obviously, green needs at least a +3 modifier.

What we're really missing from the equation is the b00bies.

As if it wasn't bad enough that Lucas skullfucks the continuity of his own setting, as torn apart by the hundreds of Star Whores fansites out there...

Also says a lot that they are going to take the easy way out and use modifiers, versus actual technology differences and backgrounds. But that would take creativity; as we all know, with the vacuum of creativity BioWare has, it's a mystery that they don't display more creativity as time goes on by.

Perhaps they might have a surprise fluke and do something amazing with quality, sort of like how BIS somehow managed to create PS:T.

The part of the article I liked was they were talking about how a powerful Jedi or Sith would imbue an item with force abilities just by using it. They'd leave an impression of power on the item.

And here I thought the force was causes by midichlorins that lived in the bloodstream of certain people who became jedi.

Well, the thing that gets me is they're clinging to the fantasy motiff that everything of power is ancient, even when it doesn't actually fit Star Wars at all. A light saber was just a weapon, after all. We know Anakin lost a light saber at some point because Obiwan gave one that Anakin lost to Luke. We've seen Anakin lose a light saber in Episode 2, no big deal really. We've seen Luke lose his in Empire Strikes Back, as well.

They're just weapons, there's nothing special about them. Having +3 Light Sabers would totally go against the movies.
