Of course, a true RPG is more than just a good story and plenty of dialogue choices. RPGs mean combat, and lots of it. KotOR's combat system initially looks like it's a third-person real-time system similar to an action game. A few minutes of play, however, reveals that the familiar behind-the-scenes dice rolling is still going on. Indeed, old-school RPG fans who enjoyed the Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale series will find that the system is almost exactly the same order-while-paused Wizards of the Coast/Dungeons & Dragons/d20 system they're familiar with (albeit from a 3D third-person perspective).

Except the fact you can't manually move your party members where you need them to be at the same time.

No, action CRPGs mean combat and lots of it. Proper CRPGs are only combat and lots of it if the player wants it that way.

You can avoid a lot of combat in KOTOR. In fact, one particular enocunter has it so it is BEST to avoid it. Use your computer skills, and the like to avoid unneccesary battles and still collect xp. Most enemies net you 25-50 xp which you can eaisly get back bu hacking the computers and the like.

I agre with SP; though. It be nice to have a way to directly move the party at the same time instead of having to do it manually.

Well, there's a lot you can't avoid also. It's nice that they're trying to accomplish ways of doing things like this, but honestly, it just seems more like BioWare is doing the one-trick-pony stuff they always do. It seems like bad guys would learn NOT to leave easily repairable combat droids laying around so not just anyone could hack them and make it easier for them to wipe out their grunts. Then again, I'm not much farther than Taris, but I haven't seen this off Taris yet.. But that thing is all over Taris.

It really cheeses me off that if I have a guy just around a corner, I have to initiate combat with my line of site guy, let that play out a bit, then switch guys just to tell them who to attack.

Yeah, which is why i said, that the game is a BIO game through and through. No doubt about it.

As for the second thing, I agree, that just gets on my nerves. It enters into my complaints about the control scheme which I find lacking. You get used to it; but still annoying.

Now that you all have played it, is the combat a step back or a step up. From what I am reading its more Final Fantasy with pause and play, which would be a shame.

The combat is nothing like Final Fantasy except for maybe the fact that you attack the enemy. But then, by that credence, all rpg games with combat are like FF. But even still again, FF wasn't the first rpg to have combat in it, so they aren't like FF. :P

There's no spiky haired people with big swords, no power bars to fill up in order to make your super special not so special attacks, and definitely no annoying FF win theme after battle is over.
