Genghis Khan IV PC OST - Japanese Strategy

AIbU58G.png

The last chapter had the Kamakura Shogunate fighting the Chagatai Khanate while enduring multiple attacks from the Mamluk Sultanate. In the end, the Chagatai Khanate is close to defeat while timely reinforcements have finally arrived and beaten back the Mamluk offensive at Tabriz.

Upon the conquest of Samarkand, the Shogunate forces in Central Asia simultaneously go their way to attack the last remaining cities of the collapsing Chagatai Khanate, while in the Caucasus Mountains, one of the Hojo princes leads an army to occupy a Mamluk city while the rest of the forces in Tabriz fight off the Mamluks.

LRzUvKY.png

Next turn, the Hojo prince frees the last Il-Khante city from the Mamluks, and thus they are no longer able to recruit Mongolian cavalry anymore which greatly weakens the military might of the Mamluks.

The King of Japan orders all officers in Central Asia not currently attacking the Chagatai khanate to move to Nishapur for the invasion of the Mamluk city of Baghdad. The city of Urgench falls while the Cannon Unit Corps slowly arrives at the city of Balkh to destroy the last Mongol presence in Central Asia.

vCPDBwm.png

The siege begins.

3rkzQFE.png

S21Qeie.png

Just like the previous khan, the current ruler has high war and intelligence and a good unit aptitude all-around, but he lacks battle skills, and the city has no horse resources, so he stuck with using light bowmen instead of Mongolian cavalry. The cannon units easily break the gates while providing covering fire for the samurai as they charge into the citadel. Even with light bowmen, the arrows pack a punch alongside the catapult shots.

s3pSmNh.png

But once Masashige's samurai were in range to let loose fire arrows upon the CO unit, the outcome was inevitable. The Chagatai Khanate falls to the Kamakura Shogunate, and a cultural item has been acquired. The research to create precious metals would be valuable to the Shogunate.

In the city of Tabriz, the Shogunate forces begin their assault on the city of Baghdad, and that's not even getting to the military buildup at Nishapur to begin the conquest of the Middle East.

UtkU7dr.png

Meanwhile in the West, the war between the Kingdom of Sicily and the Kipchak Khanate over the poor Kingdom of Hungary continues on with no clear winner while another Eastern Roman offensive against the Mamluk city of Tarsus fails.

Genghis Khan IV PC OST - Army Attack

The Mamluk Sultanate is completely exhausted as the Shogunate forces easily set up their siege of the city of Baghdad and destroy one army attempting a feeble defense. The loss of the Il-Khanate cities is clear, as the Baghdad garrison consists up only light bowmen and catapults, with their CO unit being a camel cavalry, although the Sultan has high stats but no battle skills.

1iOcpzr.png

ikOvHS7.png

The outcome is predictable. The city of Baghdad is liberated by the Shogunate as the Mamluk Sultan is put to death. The Japanese Samurai and their allies begin conquest of the Middle East.

Back at the Kamakura capital of Dadu, three new Hojo princes have come of age, one Arab, an Indian, and a Tibetan, and all of them quite skilled and gifted. They'll be sent to the west, as they'll be able to utilize Indian and Islamic units to their full strengths.

fQRgFAl.png

The shogunate forces swarm the Middle East as the Mamluks remain completely inept in the face of the Samurai onslaught.

Masashige conquers Tarsus while a Hojo prince takes two Mamluk cities to the south of Baghdad. Next turn, Takauji and Nitta conquer the Mamluk city of Damascus and acquire a culture item in the process, a Herbal Medicine Book. Seeing the massive threat so close to their capital, the Mamluks finally raise their armies in defense of their homelands.

ilTLmNI.png

3frDp8v.png

While busy resupplying the armies and refortifying the newly conquered cities, Ashikaga Takauji and Masanari are accepted as son-in-laws to the Hojo by marrying the young daughters of the clan, which allows them to command 800-man armies instead of 600.

K2EfUlj.png

wysB2qU.png

The next turn has Masanari and Takauji attack the Mamluk capital of Cairo, while Nitta heads south to finish off the remaining Mamluk cities in the Arab peninsula. With the nearest city having no cavalry besides camelry, they have to make do with using Monk infantry and cannons. Meanwhile, a Hojo prince protects the eastern Arab cities from the approaching Mamluk forces while the remaining officers at Nishapur are relocated to the Chagatai city nearest to the Kipchak khanate for the potential invasion of Russia.

Masanari approaches Cairo and begins the siege. The new Mamluk sultan is fairly strong and has the Rapidfire skill, but both Masanari and the Mongolian general are just too strong and swiftly overwhelm the garrison. The Mamluk capital falls, and loads of cultural items are acquired.

Masashige is astonished by the wealth and knowledge of Cairo, as he sees fire that burns even on water, wonderful Islamic architecture, a medical book of written by a famous Jewish physician of Saladin and world maps that showcases how small Japan is in comparison to the continents of the West.

u6RkNLX.png

C1mZf1r.png

The rest of the Mamluk cities are conquered in swift fashion until only one city in Asia Minor is left.

hmx30zf.png

gttz95q.png

While the Shogunate armies in the Middle East reorganize to both eliminate the last Mamluk resistance in Asia Minor and to prepare for the invasion of Europe and North Africa, the Kingdom of Sicily finally conquers the Kingdom of Hungary while the Eastern Roman Empire decides to preemptively attack their new Japanese neighbor. A big mistake but a welcome excuse.

1uHQ2Nn.png

NFrZ1CR.png

Also, the acquisition of Cairo's cultural artifacts leads to the development of new cultural items for war. The first strengthens the power of flamethrowers but the use of gunpowder-fueled fire arrows will undoubtedly increase the power of the Shogunate Samurai.

It's all coming together now for the final stage.

The last chapter ended with triumph as the Kamakura Shogunate has completely exhausted the strength of the Mamluk Sultanate while dealing the final blow to the Chagatai Khanate. As a result, the entire Middle East belongs to Sacred Japan after a counter-invasion, and the Shogunate is planning further western conquests as they finish off the once-mighty Sultanate's last city in Asia Minor.

MBEw4Ok.png

zkEqJqG.png

The Mamluk Sultanate has been reduced to only one city with only a meager five officers left, and the "God of War" Masashige himself is sent to destroy the last Mamluk resistance as preparations for the invasion of Europe begin. Back at mainland China, the Japanese city of Nanjing has grown to become a cultural powerhouse in weapons and academics thanks to extensive trade networks and the many cultural artifacts acquired from the western expeditions, and thus the shogunate and imperial court are moving to further benefit from the results.

Masashige besieges the l
ast Mamluk city. The most powerful officer of the Kamakura Shogunate who commands the powerful Samurai cavalry easily steamrolls the garrison, and the Mamluk Sultanate, once the most powerful country in Eurasia, dies a whimpering death.

Europe remains utterly in chaos and disunity, with no single country being a superpower, unlike the Mamluks of the Middle East and the Kamakura Shogunate of Asia. The Marinid Sultanate, the Kingdom of Sicily, and the Mongol Kipchak Khanate are locked in a stalemate while the so-called Holy Roman and Eastern Roman Empires and the Kingdoms of England and Norway are reduced to petty nations barely able to survive the chaos. The King of Japan has decided to end the chaos that plagues Europe forever to achieve peace and introduce these western barbarians proper Japanese culture.

WhgEG6S.png

A few turns later, and the shogunate has developed a new model cannon that is larger and far more powerful than the previous model.

The Kipchak Khanate is close to conquering the Eastern Roman Empire, and the King of Japan orders Masashige and the Mongol commander to lead an army to both prevent the Mongols from taking Constantinople but also to liberate the city from the incompetent Romans despite being ahead of schedule for the conquest of Europe. The Eastern Roman Navy forms a defense line against the Shogunate forces, but the Mongol commander easily destroys the naval blockade and the Kipchak invaders surrounding the city so that the siege can now begin.

Soon Masashige manages to breakthrough and begins the siege of Constantinople. The Eastern Roman Emperor has a mediocre war stat but a good INt and commands a knight(the most powerful melee cavalry), while the rest of the garrison is made up of flamethrowers( a interesting unit in practice but poor in execution as all it's just gives a chance to set a unit on fire but not damage it) and shortbowmen. The power of the newly upgraded cannon unit shows as it easily destroys the gates and its shots kill off 300 men. Soon, the garrisons falls to Kusonoki Masashige's superiority and the city of Constantinople falls, numerous cultural artifacts are acquired, and the Kamakura Shogunate takes its first step into Europe.

The city of Constantinople is certainly the jewel of the Western barbarians and the cultural artifacts acquired are proof of it. The artistic use of pieces of stones to create an image, their buildings of stone crafted elegantly and their ancient knowledge but the strong walls and fortifications of Constantinople and their castles and strong armor will be an excellent military addition to the Shogunate armies.

The King of Japan announces the start of the European conquest, with the forces of Constantinople led by Masanari busy building up and destroying the remaining Kipchak armies while the Shogunate forces at Cairo led by Takauji attack the Marinid Sultanate in North Africa and the Hojo forces in Central Asia bein the attack the Kipchak khanate.

The campaign in Russia goes smoothly as the Kipchak forces are powerless before the battlehardened forces of the Shogunate used to the usual Mongol tactics. The Indian Hojo Prince's elephant units prove to be an excellent asset in easily destroying the city gates.

With the officer transfer complete, Masashige leads an army to attack the city of Pest and easily captures it in order to divert the Kingdom of Sicily's attention from the North African side. Back at the city of Tunis, Nitta repeals a siege attack by the crusaders with advanced cannon fire while Takauji fights off the Marinid Sultanate's armies.

In Russia, the shogunate forces split into two forces to quickly conquer the Kipchak Khanate. Novgorod is easily taken without a fight, but the Kipchak capital of Kiev proves to be a tough nut to crack as it manages to barely force a brutal stalemate that severely depletes the shogunate siege force and are thus are forced to retreat to the recently occupied city of Sarai.

0aSePRH.png

fYZ9a0I.png

jGpm500.png

Next turn and an annoying rebellion from one of the officers occurs at the city of Urgench. Too bad for him that the two Hojo princes who are supposed to be on route to Russia are there, and they quickly subject the city to a siege that leads to an easy victory and reclamation.

Back at the front lines, the Marinid capital city of Marrakech and the Sicilian city of Venice fall to the Shogunate, with the latter later having cultural artifacts that can be acquired. The Shogunate benefits from accquring the Venetian's ship technology and glassware factories including a curious device that can be worn to improve eyesight.

The clash between Europe and the Kamakura Shogunate continues. The Kipchak Khanate desperately tries to take advantage of the Shogunate's failed siege by sending armies, but they are defeated. Soon, the shogunate forces begin the 2nd Japanese siege of Kiev, and this time the city falls, a cultural item is acquired, and Russia is under Japanese dominion.

HfmAimd.png

While the North African side is completely conquered, the Kingdom of Sicily goes all out in the defense of Italy, sending as many troops as possible to retake Venice. Masashige aborts his planned siege of the Sicilian capital of Naples to relieve the Sicilian siege of Venice by directly attacking the bulk of the crusader's army. Using fire arrows and confusion tactics to remove the advantage of majority from the crusaders, Masashige destroys two crusader armies, and one barely limps to flee the slaughter.

The Japanese domination of Eurasia is close at hand.

Genghis Khan IV PC OST: Western European Strategy

wo1WCkI.png

The last chapter has the Kamakura Shogunate begin the conquest of Europe after they have defeated the once-mighty Mamluke Sultanate. With the west divided between the Marinid Sultanate, the Kipchak Khanate, and the Kingdom of Sicily while other European kingdoms barely stay alive, it becomes easy for the Shogunate forces to conquer city after city. The Kingdom of Sicily forms a crusade alongside the remaining European factions to fight off the rising empire, but it is a losing battle.

The Sicilian armies attempt to besiege Venice, but they are unprepared by the barrage of cannon fire that quickly destroys any offensive push towards the castle.

With the Sicilian offensive broken, Masashige destroys the remaining stragglers while Nitta slowly closes in on Genoa. In Hungary, the Mongolian officer fights off an expeditionary army from the Kingdom of England who are attempting to conquer Pest.

As if the English army, which's being commanded by a prince, is bad enough, the Kipchak Khanate joins in the attack as well. The Mongolian officer's attempt to kill off the whole army in one go fails as he only kills one army. However, the Shogunate forces from Russia are on their way to besiege the Kipchak city of Krakov.

Next turn, Nitta initiates a daring siege battle to conquer Genoa. Despite being outnumbered 2-1 and only commanding a 600-man army composed of 4 warrior monks and a cannon. He manages to do so, and he acquires valuable cultural items. This completely isolates the Sicilian capital city of Naples.

The shogunate forces drive deeper into Europe. Takauji conquers the former Castilian capital of Toledo from the Marinids, but while a massive shogunate army occupies the city of Cologne and destroys the Holy Roman Empire, who are have up to this point haven't actually sent even one army at all due to being so poor and ruined by the constant conflicts. Valuable cultural artifacts are acquired. (The Holy Roman Empire having Longbow units is unexpected; England must have given it as an Alliance offer sometime ago.)

After a long time of doing absolutely nothing, the Kingdom of Norway finally sends armies to attack the recently occupied city of Novgorod, but they are far too late to make a difference. Only four nations remain, and Shogunate forces begin their advance as scattered resistance from England and the Marinids desperately fight the inevitable as the Shogunate boasts having the most multicultural army in history. Ironically, the Marinids are left using Knights and Crusader units at this point, which further reduces their fighting power as they are using Islamic officers instead of Europeans ones

The King of England has average WAR stat but a fairly high INT stat and almost all the war skills except rapid fire skill. Given that he has Longbowmen, bow units with the longest atk range, it's thankful he's not even more deadly.

Masashige and Nitta's samurai units attack the gates while Takauji's warrior monks sneakily climb over the walls to bypass the English garrison. The English Longbow men launch a rain of fire arrows that deal good damage to the samurai forces.

Hojo Tokimune (~1308)

Known as the “Great General of the Lords

Dies in 1308
Had 13 children

A fierce general with the most power on the battlefield
His ability to command regardless of military discipline is a testament to his valor as a warlord.
A god of war who had mastered all the skills of combat and was invincible even when riding alone.
His record during his reign: 73 battles, 68 victories, 2 min, 25 kingdoms, 25 victories.

Hojo Tadatsuna (1308-1340)

Known as the “Great General of Execution

Unified the world in 1340.
Prince of Hojo Tokimune, with 21 children

A fierce general who is most powerful on the battlefield
A fierce general who could make the most powerful assault on the battlefield, both at sea and on land
His ability to lead his cavalry in a dazzling assault is astonishing.
His record during his reign: 265 battles, 254 victories, 3 minutes; King's record: 1 battle, 1 victory.

And that's the end of that. The Kamakura Shogunate playthrough has been completed, and I'm still surprised at how far I've gone just to play this game despite having no skills at reading Japanese. I just love this time period of the Mongols in medieval history and felt disappointed that no game so far has ever depicted the whole of Eurasia to this extent. I'm glad not only to have played this game to the fullest but have also attracted much attention to this game through this LP thread and the various resources I've provided through Google Drive.

I hope that the few posters here who have followed up to now have enjoyed this. :-D

While I'm not be making another LP for a long while, I'd like the Codexers to choose which Koei game I'd cover once I have the free time to do so.

1. Nobunaga's Ambition: Rise to Power

The last Nobunaga game to have the traditional turn-based gameplay before moving on to the RTS realm with Iron Triangle. It boast having a comprehensive city-building mechanics as well as a RTS battlefield.

2. Romance of the Three Kingdoms IX

This game has always been under the shadow of Rotk XI due to the later being recommended as the best ruler-based game but my playthroughs of the former had me convinced this is game is far better. The gameplay is almost similar to the RTS gameplay of Nobunaga's Ambition: Iron Triangle but still turn-based where the standard phase is all about the planning while the action phase is where the player hopes that the orders given to their AI controlled armies aren't going to backfire.
3. Celtic Tales: Balor of the Evil Eye.

Arguably the most obscure Koei game released in English. Celtic Tales has you play as one of the few scattered tribes of Eire and your aim is to unite the tribes by force or diplomacy in order to fight against their oppressive rulers, the cruel giants called the Formors led by the evil Balor. It's gameplay is surprisingly similar to King of Dragon Pass.

Congrats on the world conquest!

Celtic Tales is my first choice for the next LP, followed by Nobunaga's Ambition.

I'd be pretty interested in seeing that, I like those text based strategy/narrative games.

Congrats on finishing the LP here! Koei has made some really awesome games over the years, it's a shame they're too monocled to attract a lot of copycats.
